The function of EGR is to Lower combustion temperature at small throttle openings, cruising conditions. This is done by reducing the percentage of O2 in the fuel charge. The problem is the exhaust track runs right next to the #4 cylinder at the top and this is HOT exhaust gas. This hot gas heats the #4 cylinder top to a higher temperature than the other 3. There are 2 independent things going on here. Each engine design is different so pointing at the Ford or Chevy board as a reference is not germane. If you do anything that increases horsepower you are also increasing combustion temperature.
