I'm inclined to believe all 2.2L ecotec engines are the same engine block internals with ancillary parts needed to separate federal from California engines. The ecm/pcm may have a different tune to accommodate air injection from non air injection. You might find others with more expertise in other Ion forums as well as other GM forums/models using the same ecotec engine with the same questions asked here.

If you cannot find an answer then perhaps calling/writing/emailing GM headquarters may result in someone knowledgeable enough to give you info. There's always local GM service centers to ask.
