This sounds VERY relevant to your problem. Imagine trying to start the engine with the tranny not in neutral or park. No crank, right? Just like what you're experiencing.

Next time you experience the problem, try starting it with the tranny in neutral. If that doesn't work, try holding the key at "Start" with one hand, while CAREFULLY nudging the shifter from Neutral toward Reverse and Drive with the other. If at some point the starter catches, that points to a neutral safety switch that needs adjustment or replacement. Or it could the wiring or the connector to the NSS.
