I bought a Moog (used to be a good name for parts) for a Cadillac. Turned out to be the same dirtbag China part you can but for 60% less, but in a Moog box.

There are a lot of possible interchange candidates from the GM family.
Cavalier, Cobalt, Pontiac G6, even some Saabs. Are we talking manual or automatic trans here? And what year Ion do you have?

Those numbers do seem high but since you used two gauges it's likely correct. I think 190 is a more typical value.

No. The first gen Saturns use a Saturn specific trans.
The Ions use GM corporate transmissions.

If you can schedule the downtime, the safest approach is a timing chain and guides replacement. Then you're probably good to go to 300,000 miles.

I use the Blue Driver which can read air bag and abs codes in addition to the Pcodes for the drivetrain. They also maintain a database from their users which gives you a list of possible fixes...

I'd also say by the time the Ion came out, the engine/trans/emissions system was common with a lot of GM cars. Anybody who can work on a Chevy Cobalt can work on an Ion.

Since I don't have regular access to the car to do sequential troubleshooting, I went ahead and changed both the gas cap and the solenoid. So far, so good.

This is looking like a vacuum leak with occasional P0442s so we'll look at the fuel tank cap and evap canister solenoid valve and see if the P0172 goes away too.

The engine (Ecotec 2.2) and trans (4T40) are some of the highest volume units built by GM and suspension are mostly common with GM models like the Cobalt and HHR. There may be some Saturn specific...
