Re: Should I junk my '08 Astra?

The hyper-inflation of 2021 changes the question a bit. Used car prices rose by 30%+ and decent used cars were very difficult to source. New car lots in our area are empty and the few cars available...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

New Bosch Windshield Wipers.

AC is not working. Probably a leak. We will have Saab specialist look at this next week.
- AC was weak this summer. Recharged in July and was working OK for a few...

Re: Headlight Assembly

Our family also had a Geo Prizm. That was an awesome design upgrade to the Toyota Corolla.

The Astra was Car of the Year in Europe for several years and they are all over the place. They are...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

Replaced Downstream 02 Sensor (GM GENUINE 55565000). The two 02 wrenches didn't seem to grip well. So we moved to a hammer, a few days of WD40, a huge 22mm socket with a socket wrench with a flexible...

Re: How do you remove the rear brake line hoses?

Public library might have subscription to AllData. You might need to look at that on a terminal at the library.

Re: How do you remove the rear brake line hoses?

Does this video help with replacing the dust covers? 2008 Opel Astra but not sure the rear disc brakes are the same.

Re: P304

For P0304, first I might recheck gap on the spark plugs, check coil pack connection is good. If no luck maybe replace coil pack.

These cars did not have exotic spark plugs from the factory. So if...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

Some codes have been popping up:
P0141
P2096
P2A01

I see goob had that issue May 2016 and downstream 02 sensor cleared it for him.

Re: Won't Turn Over II

Some excellent comments above.

Changing the alternator is rough and I don't know how you did it at night with a flashlight.

Thinking about typical Astra issues, we see batteries, alternators,...

Re: Won't Turn Over II

What OBD codes show up when you scan the car?

Did you try gently knocking on the starter body a few times to see if that would get the starter to work? At least that would show starter is failing....

Re: Adding Sport Button to Opel

I think the guy in the videos summarizes the changes.

IIRC, maybe more responsive throttle response, a bit tighter steering, firmer suspension (Euro cars with active suspension option). I think...

Re: Low System Voltage

See these pages for what we did to improve charging. This also shows some of the important grounds. Reducing resistance across the system just a little can make a big difference:

Re: Low System Voltage

We did some voltage drop tests. Then cleaned the battery terminals and a bunch of grounds. That improved charging performance. You can search my posts for starting tips and warnings.

Get a DMM and...

QUICKHEAT - Electric Auxiliary heating for cabin

It appears some European Astras have the QUICKHEAT. This looks to be a 1000 watt Electric Auxiliary heating system to quickly heat the passenger cabin in the winter. Maybe only sold in cold climates?...

Adding Sport Button to Opel

This video shows us how to install and activate the sport button on a similar Opel Zafira. The process may be similar for the Astra. Activate closed captions if you don't understand the mechanic.

Re: Oil in spark plug well

I don't think you should reuse a junkyard valve cover gasket. That is a weak point of the Astra. Call your local parts supplier and order a premium gasket.

The Astra does not have a normal PCV...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

These little cars handle quite well with newer suspension bits.

I installed those same numbered front struts. I also installed rear shocks 93182103, which seem to match perfectly in height and...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Not my experience with the XE or XR.

You can recycle the rubber boots and bungs.

The front coil springs break on occasion. The breaks I have seen look like a hairline paint chip near the ends...

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Looks great.

I think someone here used different Saturn alloy wheels that looked good. Maybe the Saturn Aura? They were cheap. Search the forums for that alternative.

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

The paint below the headlights seems to fail on all these Astras. I think the top of the front bumper did not have enough paint from the factory. Now you have a cool, fairly reliable car sorted out. ...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

I'm not too worried about getting parts to be frank. Might take a few extra days so keep that in mind.

- Dealers and rockauto have a lot of parts easily ordered.

- car-part.com shows a bunch of...
