Re: Can I swap a sl1 engine into a sl2 car?

The sure thing would be to swap the good transmission, engine, and PCM into the car with the blown engine.

Re: 97 SL 1 Compressor Leaks

Clean off the dye with acetone, recharge the system, maybe add a little more dye, and let it leak again.

Re: 97 SL 1 Compressor Leaks

Leaky GM compressors are a thing.

Re: 97 SL 1 Compressor Leaks

Great pics. When I fixed my 2000 Buick Century AC, I pulled a compressor from a junkyard car that had pressure in the system. When I fix my '98 SC2 I'll do the same. It's an option.

Re: Sudden onset of engine clacking/knocking noise while driving uphill

With a bad lifter you could have pounded the valve and compromised the valve guide. Maybe the valve also. Have you been able to do a compression test?

Re: Engine rebuild and trans kits

I went to the machine shop and they bought the kit for me. $1400 for parts + machining in 2017 dollars.

Re: Sudden onset of engine clacking/knocking noise while driving uphill

... which brings us to a good test. Rev it with the clutch pushed in. That pushes the crank against the thrust bearing.

Re: Sudden onset of engine clacking/knocking noise while driving uphill

Look for funny wear on the cams. If that whacking is from a collapsed lifter it could leave a witness mark.

Re: 1998 Saturn Sw2 Door lock control rod

You two spambots should really review word choice. What is your first language?

Re: Sudden onset of engine clacking/knocking noise while driving uphill

I think it's possible. Maybe there is a metronome app or something, you can set it to one beat per rev at 900 RPM and then one beat every other at 900 RPM. Listen and compare. That is a low tech...

Re: Sudden onset of engine clacking/knocking noise while driving uphill

Hard to diagnose via YouTube. Any chance a lifter is bad? Is the noise once per rev or every other?

Re: Weird Idling Issues, Worsening Over Time

I replaced my TPS on Saturday on the '98. Two drives so far and there is a huge difference. Engine runs a lot smoother and no more random 1700 RPM idle. The most alarming thing it used to do was...

Re: Seeking a transmission recommendation.

What I like about the larger pin in the Hunt4Steve procedure is that it is snug both in the differential housing and in the shaft for the spider gears. Stock, I think it was loose in one or the...

Re: Rear Main Seal Leak

If you have oil on the clutch, it would slip. Would feel like driving on ice where it is hard to get going and you constantly have to get off the gas to stop wheel spin - except here it is clutch...

Re: 2001 Saturn sl2, maintenance questions and more.

My Saturns have the aluminum intake, so we'll have to wait for a G3 owner to come along and comment. If I had a G3 with tape on the manifold, I think I'd be at the junkyard looking for a...
