Re: Engine head replacement 07 ion 2.2

I've had good luck with KBS brush on high temp coating on cast iron manifolds.
The cleaner the better...if you can get it bead blasted that's a good prep.

Re: Exhaust/intake valve brands

I'd be comfortable with Melling parts.
Brands from China or India are likely cheap but quality is difficult to judge.

Re: Should I junk my '08 Astra?

If your chassis is not corroded, I'd say do the repairs.
That would be my biggest factor for the decision.

Re: Occasional P0172 (too rich) ... suggestions?

Thanks, will check. I only see the car a couple times each month so it may be a couple weeks.

Re: People demanding a return of Saturns

The Saturn era was a strange time in GM, it started out with some independence and different thinking, had a lot of envy from other parts of the organization because Saturn got a lot of nice shiny...

Re: Occasional P0172 (too rich) ... suggestions?

This is looking like a vacuum leak with occasional P0442s so we'll look at the fuel tank cap and evap canister solenoid valve and see if the P0172 goes away too.

Re: Finally got delivery of my Used Saturn

The engine (Ecotec 2.2) and trans (4T40) are some of the highest volume units built by GM and suspension are mostly common with GM models like the Cobalt and HHR. There may be some Saturn specific...

This is on a 2007 2.2 engine with automatic...130,000 miles
recent plugs and air filter
engine runs great
after reset may come back anywhere from 100 to 1000 miles accum

Re: opinions/rear main seal leak

Are you sure there's a seal in there in the first place?

Re: opinions/rear main seal leak

Thanks for pointing that out...need to make sure that your rear main seal is really the primary leak problem...at those miles you may have multiple areas...valve stem seals or piston rings. A rear...

Re: opinions/rear main seal leak

How much is it actually leaking? Yeah those spots on the garage floor or driveway are annoying but do you actually see the oil level depleting? I've had an S-10 pickup with a 4.3 V6 that has leaked...

Re: Is getting an XR 3.6 a bad idea?

I have a 3.6 in a Caddy SRX and while it uses a lot of oil (quart a thousand miles) I think they are OK if you maintain the level. I'd be nervous about any car that you couldn't verify the...

Re: return of the old transaxle (5 speed) fill plug removal trick

That trans design was done by Saab so the engr was probably Royal Institute instead of Harvard, LOL.

Re: return of the old transaxle (5 speed) fill plug removal trick

synthetic 75W-85 GL-4 is what the spec shows for this transmission.

Be very careful on that fill plug, making super sure that the tool is tight and won't round out the female hex.

Re: 2005 Saturn Ion 1 interchangeable parts

This might be a bit of a shade tree fix, but you might consider cutting out the bad section (I assume it's corroded) and splice in some pressure rated rubber line.

I did this on a power steering...

Re: Fuel Pump Service Port Mod

I've pulled tanks on several cars and pickups and didn't think it was all that difficult. Just make sure it's almost empty, not really that heavy, build a "cradle" out of random lumber that...

Re: L-Series Rough Terrain Upgrade

I'd vote for good tires (Michelin if you can afford them) perhaps a bit over the normal pressure, on steel rims (notice that cop cars mostly use steel rims instead of alloys, better resistance to...

Re: the old oil consumption trick on the L 4cyl ecotec

Oil's pretty cheap these days, and it looks like you're good with keeping it topped up so you don't have a low oil disaster. I've bought Costco Kirkland Dexos spec on sale for 11 bucks for 5 quart...

Re: 05 ion 2.2 need aftermarket exhaust manifold.

Are you looking for a direct replacement of the OE manifold, or a header design? Rockauto shows a bunch of OE types.

Re: Suspension Noise?

I had the same experience with Rockauto for Ion fronts.
I ordered Monroe struts, one was a nice looking Monroe made in Tennessee and the other a not very nice from China, in identical boxes. I...

Re: 2003 Saturn Ion....No Fresh Air

I believe there's a flapper door that switches between recirc and outside.

I've done troubleshooting on this problem in my old S10 pickup that used vacuum actuators, but I think the Ion uses an...

Re: 2005 Saturn Ion parking brake

You'll need to get under there and take a good look. You may need to pull the rear drums to inspect the attachment to the shoes.

Here's a YT on the rear drum parts...

Re: 2006 saturn ion automatic transmission

When you get a single cylinder code, it's good to just move existing parts from one cylinder to another to see if the problem follows the location change. That way you aren't buying stuff you might...
