Re: Backfire and mini backfires?

I'm very new to Saturns (and car repairs in general), but one of the first things I know to look at is the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor). Mine was the old, plastic style probe with a nice crack...

Re: AC pulling vacuum - only -15 psi

dryer... thanks. I will try connecting the vacuum pump only to the manifold gauge set as you've outlined. I should have thought of that myself, tbh. At least try to rule out a bad pump. The gauges...

AC pulling vacuum - only -15 psi

The AC saga continues. Originally I had hoped to just replace the clutch, but these Zexel units require special tools that are very tough to find. So I decided to swap the entire compressor. I also...

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

All plugs were removed.
I pulled the fuel pump relay, but did not floor the pedal.
The engine was warm, but it may not have completely hit full running temperature.

I should be able to try again...

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

Finally got a chance to do some diagnostics. Compression was...ok...
Cyl 1 initial 90, final 135
Cyl 2 110 - 133
Cyl 3 115 - 140
Cyl 4 90-130
So a total swing of about 10...

Re: Incompatible A/C Compressor?

OK. Nothing like change for the sake of change. I will source a line from/for a 94-98.

Thanks.

Incompatible A/C Compressor?

Finally got a chance to fix the AC unit today. Had all the tools. Had all the parts. Even had a "helper". Everything is going along just as I had hoped. Got the old compressor removed. Got the old...

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

billr...I have a basic, cheap OBD2 reader. But I've not dug much deeper than getting and clearing codes. After watching a few videos, I was thinking of looking into the fuel trims, but haven't gotten...

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

Roughly 75% of the time it takes 2-3 cycles of turning the key and cranking for up to 5 seconds or so.

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

The issue of needing a second or third crank to start happens now probably about 75% of the time. It does not seem to matter if the engine had just been running or if it is cold.

As for whether...

Re: Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

Couple additions/revisions...So I think I do hear the fuel pump when the key is first turned to On. But it is much quieter than in any other car I can recall having. And I should make clear that it...

Wrench Takes 2-3 cranks to turn over

I've had my 1999 SL1 since November. After changing the plugs and wires, ECTS, upstream O2 sensor and running some techron, I'm no longer getting any SES lights or codes. But it generally takes 2 or...

Re: A/C Clutch vs Compressor

So if my manifold gauges show approx 10 psi on both high and low sides when engine is running (but AC is off, because the clutch is exploded and will not engage), then I only have trace quantities of...

Re: AC Compressor Rattle - With Video

For many cars it is supposedly a pretty easy task to remove the clutch plate. Many require no special tools. Some require tools that most auto parts stores will lend out. But I just picked up a...

Re: How bad is it? (Rust)

Yep. I've gotten into the habit of hitting most bolts/nuts I run across with some PB.

Changing brake pads? Spritz down the tie rod backing nut and the strut tower bolts.

Replacing the dogbone...

Re: How bad is it? (Rust)

Thanks. "Possible" is a relative term. If I had a place to do the work, I might try it (if I also had another vehicle to get around with). But the association allows nothing more significant than...

A/C Clutch vs Compressor

I know there are a number of existing threads regarding the 99 AC clutch and how to remove it. For a newbie, it can be challenging to sift through 10+ years of data. So bear with me.

When I bought...

Re: Front end still sometimes "thunks"

I got it jacked up yesterday to take a look. Attached are some pics. Nothing looked *too* bad, though the joints where the swaybar connects to the knuckle seem "askew". And I was able to manipulate...

Question How bad is it? (Rust)

I bought this 1999 SL1 in November. I needed something cheap and reliable. Its met that need just fine. But I've also relaized I actually really like this car. It isn't flashy or fast. But it suits...

Re: Front end still sometimes "thunks"

That 'tighten it to loosen it' approach is what I had to do to get the old spark plugs out. They *might* have been the factory original plugs. If not, they were probably the ones that replaced the...

Re: Front end still sometimes "thunks"

Thanks.

I know with things like tie rods and hubs/bearings you can usually diagnose by lifting the vehicle and just shaking a tire. The type of movement and sound point you to the problem. Any...

Front end still sometimes "thunks"

I bought a 1999 SL1 with 150k back in November. The price was right and I needed a reliable daily driver (not that I've been driving much for the last 15 months). I've never been much of a grease...

Re: Replacing 2nd Row Seat(s)

I figured it out.

I needed to slide the seat all the way back before attempting to latch it in. That allowed both of the front hooks to engage, which caused the rear hooks to swing down "sooner"...
