Re: SL/SC motor mounts

I bought this one from Summit Racing. It's not a smiley face mount, but made very little difference. I also changed the transmission mount. What a PITA that one is! Engine still shudders at idle...

Re: Optimal coolant temperature

I believe 198 is the optimal temperature, per the manual (you will want to double check that). No need to run it hotter - the engineers who designed the engine know best.

Re: What is the purpose of Styrofoam wedges in S series?

You can see the styrofoam texture if you look close at the surface. The block looks like a piece of silver styrofoam. I did a double-take when I first saw that. LOL..

Re: Replacing intake manifold 2002 SC2

I just did mine on an '02 SL1. If I recall, the issue is getting to the bolts that mount the manifold. Some of them are difficult to get to, maybe impossible without moving the PS pump. You only...

Re: Advice! 1997 Saturn SW2

Are you saying this only started happening after the latest electrical work? If that's the case, there must have been a mistake made installing the new parts, ie, either wrong part or maybe...

Re: Vibration while in gear and stopped.

I got this one from Summit Racing. It's solid (not the "frown face" design).

Re: Vibration while in gear and stopped.

Yeah I'm thinking it's normal, or at least not unusual, with the Saturn SL's. I once had a Nissan Versa with the CVT transmission. You could not feel a thing when that car was in gear at a stop. ...

Re: Vibration while in gear and stopped.

Thank you billr. Not compression, but I have borescoped the cylinders. The car only has 71000 miles on it - the cylinders looked like new. It doesn't use oil, seems to run clean, it just has this...

Vibration while in gear and stopped.

Well I've changed out the top mount and trans mount with brand new, but my 2002 SL1 still vibrates a lot. Annoying! Anyone know what causes this? Maybe all Saturn's do this? - Thanks

Car in...

Re: P0401 egr

Well my super intake cleanout plus PCV valve didn't work - still getting the P0401 code. Guess I'll throw a new EGR valve at it next and see what happens.

Melissa did you have any luck?

Re: P0401 egr

Anything similar will work. Just has to be both flexible and tough enough not to break. Needs to be able to curve around corners. For example, I used the sleeve off of a push-pull control cable.

Re: P0401 egr

BTW, if you don't require emissions testing, no one will see the SES light. You can drive with it on if you wish.

Re: P0401 egr

I've been chasing this error code myself for weeks. I haven't changed out the EGR valve. Not yet anyway.

I fished a cable through the EGR passageway. What kept coming out from the intake side...

Re: Saturn SL P0401

I did the cable clean out trick. I got black tar-like crud on the cable. I also found the PCV valve old and all gummed up. I'm convinced the entire intake manifold is clogged with tar from the oil...

Re: Saturn SL P0401

I've also tried the "cable-rootor" cleanout technique. When I use a cable fed down the intake side of the EGR passage, when pull it out it's coated with black tar-like crud. I don't think the cable...

Re: Saturn SL P0401

I have 2002 SL1 with the P0401 code that wont stay off. When I measure pin "E" I get 8.3 volts. Same value whether the car is running or not. How strange.. is pin "E" for certain supposed to be 12...

Re: One time overheat?

Yeah there is something odd about the threads on the cap, or the threads on the tank, or maybe both. One can put the cap on tight, but it isn't actually sealing, and you wont know it until it boils...

Re: One time overheat?

Problem solved!

My helper noticed that when I screwed the coolant cap on, it didn't look like it went on right. It was square, screwed down, and tight, but somehting didn't look right to him. He...

Re: One time overheat?

Well unfortunately my efforts have not fixed this. Frustrated enough to junk the car, take the $ loss and move on to somehting else.

The leaking hose was not the problem - it was just loose. I...

Re: 4-Pin Relay Orientation?

Thank you fdryer for that info - appreciated!

So, pin 30 always goes on the battery power socket. I checked the sockets with the power off. Interestingly, in 2 cases (the 2 smaller relays) there...

4-Pin Relay Orientation?

The under hood junction box has the relay functions labeled on the lid. But it doesn't indicate anything about the individual pins. Is the top right hole always for relay pin 30? Or, do I recall...

Ok I changed out the thermostat (I was going to do that anyway) and fired it up. Filled system with plain water. Wait, what is that drip coming out of the recirculation hose where it connects to...

Re: One time overheat?

Thank you for reminding me - I had forgotten. So even on straight water, it shouldn't be boiling over.

I replaced the ECTS with brand new. I use an OBD-II scanner to check the gauge against the...

Re: One time overheat?

True, except I think for this car the ideal operating temp, which is maintained while underway, is around 185. So, one might expect the fan to try to hold somehting closer to that temp. But it...
