Re: 02 sc1 main bearing
If those oil changes were done every 5,000 to 7,000 MILES, you weren't monitoring the oil level and you weren't using a synthetic oil, you may have other bearings and stuff worn as well.
They...

Re: "First Saturn That's Not Boring"
In my opinion, after driving three different SLx-es for nearly 10 years, the s-series is "boring" to me - the interior of all three were nearly identical - even down to the color.
On the other...

Re: Saturn Not Highway Worthy?
No offense intended, but are you sure your dad is concerned about the condition of the car or is he really concerned about the experience of the driver but doesn't want to hurt your feelings?
Just...

Re: Motor Trouble
Ditto.
About the only thing even remotely close to that description would be overheating the engine and warping the block or cylinder head.
If you do have a bum engine, you may want to consider...

Re: I couldn't get my oil filter off.
I have one similar to that except the band is wider.
A tip for not crushing the filter when using a band wrench - tighten the band around the end that seats onto the engine - that end is more...

Re: Best maintenance options
Engine flushes typically are a waste of money and are potentially dangerous as they can loosen up crud and get it into places it shouldn't be.
Power steering system flushes are also a waste of...

Re: Should they redesign the S Series?
Ahh, sort of Saturn's answer to the Aveo? :hmpf:
My 96SL1 manual didn't quite get to that mileage of the highway unless my wife was filling the tank and doing the math :D
Seriously, if the...

Re: 1995 Saturn SL2 no power to starter solenoid
I bought a kit with an assortment of fuses and it included a nice little fuse tester... a wonderful tool to have. Fuses sometimes "look" good but aren't so a continuity test is a good practice.

Re: GM making OnStar, stability control standard
What if OnStar used a similar technology as the emergency locator beacons on aircraft? Aren't those detected by satellite? They can't talk using that technology (yet), but the emergency can be...

Re: My Mechanic Says, "Use 20W-50 Oil"
I think that's a reasonable approach - not a huge departure from the manufacturer's recommendations and justifiable for the climate.
Geeze... if your oil was stored outside, you'd never get it...

Re: Wrecked my SL2 need help
Well, there's two problems with that:
1) Some people get coverage long enough to get the license, then drop it shortly thereafter,
2) Some of the people driving out there buy a car (here the...

Re: GM making OnStar, stability control standard
I'd spring for OnStar if the monthly service fee was $5 - $17 is a bit expensive. If the OnStar system was standard equipment on all GM vehicles, I'd think GM could seriously drop its cost through...

Re: 1996 SC2 electrical failure
You don't mention that the electrical system light (the one that looks like a battery) came on.
After the battery is charges and the alternator fixed, you may want to verify the bulb is good.

Re: Nuts and Batteries
I know the nuts fit a 10 mm socket on my 95, so perhaps they are 10mm?
The question is whether they are Metric and SAE.

Re: Do you use a blockheater?
If you find it to be helpful, you may want to invest in a heavy duty timer and set it the start heating 2 hours or so before you expect to start it. They can be quite expensive to use.

Re: Do I need a new alternator?
It depends on how they tested the alternator. There are faults in the alternator assembly (if I remember correctly involve the rectifier bridge) that can go through some alternator tests without...
