Re: Passed Smog this time!

NOTE: My SL2 kept failing even though I had a very good (and very new) OEM stle CAT. I ended up getting a Magnaflow CAT which is better than OEM and it BARELY got the HC's under the limit, but only...

Re: Passed Smog this time!

You're lucky you are not in a Bay Area county where they drop the limits even further. Look at the limits they put on my 1992 Saturn SL2 (notice the NO limits):

You get 835 max, mine gets 585...

Re: Passed Smog this time!

Correct. And the "average" values they put on the test limits are made up using data from newer cars. They want the old cars in the junk yard.

Re: Passed Smog this time!

Yes, the CAT is the main remover of HC's.

I had to mix in some E-85 into the gasoline to get the ethanol up to about 30% to pass mine. That lowers HC output but raises NOX (I almost failed that).

Re: Type of oil affect MPG???

It was my understanding the PAOs have much better viscosity stability over temp and need very little or no viscosity increasers to make the multi grade viscosity. My gripe is they out to put what's...

Re: Type of oil affect MPG???

In the USA, about 99% of the oil labeled full synthetic is mostly dino base stock with a little syn blended in anyway.

Re: Type of oil affect MPG???

Because they are going to get hit with fines if they can't meet the ridiculous new CAFE standards from the government. So you and I are getting micro sized 1.4L "TURBO JUICED" engines that make 300...

Re: Loud Engine Knock

Not a rod bearing, sounds like valve lifter or something cam related.

Re: Loud Engine Knock

If it's revving and the power isn't getting to the wheels, has to be slipping somewhere (usually the tranny)

Re: Type of oil affect MPG???

Why is that? For motorcycles, they tell us the thicker oils run cooler than the thinner ones.

Re: Type of oil affect MPG???

+1 I would be very surprised if oil could change it by even one MPG. Traffic and driving speed can change it by 30% or more.

Re: Oil Type to use

There are downsides to Viscosity Increasers (VIs) used to make the multi weight oil:

1) It breaks down over time which causes the viscosity of the oil to get thinner

2) The VI's (and other...

Re: Oil Type to use

My car also has tons of cold start/short trips. My commute to work was only 4 miles when I had a job. That's the old joke about the used car that the lady only drove to church and the grocery...

Re: Oil Type to use

A point from the BITOG article:

This means there really is a fundamental difference when using a true synthetic base which has specific advantages. It would be really nice to know when you...

Re: Oil Type to use

Pretty good article, but it has a definite "Oil Company" bias because it omits a couple of things. This statement (from the article) is ABSOLUTELY A FACT:

My pet peeve:

It is the reason...

Re: Oil Type to use

But how do you define synthetic.... and more importantly, how do you buy it?

Oil companies are not putting the blend information on their oils and they change them all the time to save money. How...

Re: Oil Type to use

No brilliant new ideas. Use 10W-30 in climates that don't get real cold (don't go below about 20F). Use 5W-30 in climates where it gets colder than that.

Synthetic versus dino oil is a religious...

Re: Hwy MPG

On our 92 SL2 DOHC, I think the highway mileage was around 28 ballpark going about 70 - 75 mph with AC on. California version.

Re: Help me pass emissions. Please and Thank You

I would run some of the strong fuel injector cleaner through the system.

I would then go a competent (honest) diagnostic shop to find out what's wrong

Re: Oil change interval revisited

It's actually the fault of the idiot judge presiding over the suit that Mobil brought to get the other companies to stop claiming that filtered dino oil was "synthetic". The judge ruled they could,...

Re: Oil change interval revisited

There is a lot of info posted around (I posted a bunch here) explaining how about 99% of the oil sold in the USA labeled "full synthetic" is dino oil base stock sent through a distillation process...
