Re: Hello! New Astra owner with a couple questions..

Indeed. The mounting bracket bolts required some muscle. When they did finally come out, they looked almost pristine on the inside, with factory blue thread locker still visible. The dust shield...

Re: Hello! New Astra owner with a couple questions..

Just a quick note on the brakes. I just did the rears on mine (pads and rotors) and it was a pretty quick job, but in case you don't already have it the Lisle model 28600 piston retractor tool was a...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

Such as? Just curious. Always wanted to have one on hand but didn't know what would be appropriate.

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

What code reader do you use for your Astra? Do you recommend it?

Re: Questions about my Saturn Astra

Neat decal. Must have been dealer installed. All NA Astras were sourced from Antwerp, Belgium (GM Europe); check the door tag for confirmation. W VIN code is indeed linked to Germany but the cars...

Re: anyone know how to remove the steering rack ?

Nice! Congrats on the repair. What exactly is in this kit? Noticed that it is listed as "with quick ratio"...wonder if this is only for the XR, or if it would work on the XE too?

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Thank you SO much for providing that link on the rear seats! I've owned this car for damn near 12 years and could never figure out why those latches on the front edge of the back seat exist.

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

Don't worry too much about the flex pipe repair. To date, this is the ONLY repair I've had to do on my car (other than the PS stop-leak, which really isn't a repair) in nearly 12 years of ownership....

Re: I need a 2nd opinion on this Astra

I agree - I see no significant red flags here. Carfax history often shows very little and is highly dependent on the facilities that worked on the car. I'm sure mine shows almost nothing since it's...

Re: anyone know how to remove the steering rack ?

I never got an exact number, sadly. The first shop (the pump diagnosis) wasn't confident in their diagnosis, to their credit, and they told me to take it to shop #2 without any charge. They said...

Re: anyone know how to remove the steering rack ?

Out of curiosity, I assume you're dealing with a leak? Did you find it in one of the lines? Had a leak about 18 months ago that I treated (not fixed) with stop-leak, but couldn't get a consensus...

Re: Replaced the Fishing Pole Antenna

Thanks for the link. The base on mine looks like it's spent, well, 12 years in the sun. Might think about replacing it.

Sadly I'm starting to see some somewhat significant clearcoat bubbling on...

Re: What car would you buy after Astra?

I've given it some thought but I never seem to dig up a consistent answer. I like the layout and utility of a small hatchback so will probably stay with one, but sadly there aren't many choices and...

Re: Center armrest/cupholder replacement?

I think the only options were aftermarket; I don't think there was a factory armrest, to my knowledge. I believe you could get one from Irmscher and Boomerang. I have a Boomerang in mine, and...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

Don't ask why I remember such minutia, but I believe that color was called "sandstone". Nice color and not all that common.

Congrats on the purchase!

Re: The Ultimate Tire Replacement thread

The rims were missing the center caps when I picked them up, so just for fun (my 7-year old thought it was silly) I got a set of used OEM Saab caps on ebay and threw them on.

Surprised to hear...

Re: The Ultimate Tire Replacement thread

Good info on the black lug bolts. Those covers are indeed a pain. I gave up and they're in a bag sitting in the garage...

Here's the setup I just removed a couple weeks ago. I picked up a set...

Re: Manual transmission failure

Out of curiosity, can you tell me any details on your PS line problems? Back in June I started losing PS fluid to the point the pump was starting to make noise and steering effort was affected. ...

Re: Manual transmission failure

Even if the linkage turns out to be ok, I would be in the market for a used tranny rather than a rebuild. They are all over eBay in the $300-500 range, some with fairly low mileage. Maybe you could...

Re: Intermittent Starting Problem

What AstraFasta said - would check fuel pump relay not getting energized, potentially by some glitch involving a security/safety system? Strange. Are you locking the car with the fob between...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

Fair enough. And it's definitely appreciated that you share the info on the site. There aren't too many of these on the road, so the info really does help.

183 does seem a little low. I think...

Re: Astra 45k mile service - inexpensive & runs like new!

I have to ask - did you order these because the thermostat housing is leaking, or is it because these are the last two remaining original parts in your car?

Really just trying to be funny, but...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

Yes, agreed on the inconsistent TB intervals. Another example: the same engine in the Chevy Cruze (and presumably the Sonic) has an interval of 97,500 miles...and frankly, the Astra owner's manual...

Re: The last Saturn Astra owner.

Sounds like a similar scenario to me. I bought this car as a leftover two weeks after my daughter was born so I could have a back seat. She's about to turn 11. Time flies!

I'm in no hurry to...
