Re: 2000 Saturn LW1 30% compression on 1 cylinder

This should be posted in the tech section / L series.
If the vehicle is in good shape and well maintained, it might be worth fixing, but paying somebody to do it likely isn't good economics.

Re: Need suggestions to replace "obsolete" coil spring isolators

A quick look at rockauto shows nothing available so I think you're right.
I looked under Chevy Cobalt and HHR also since I believe they're the same parts.

Here's a diagram with some GM part...

Re: Home brew '07 2.2 turbo kit?

Not an expert, but that has to take away a lot of the power-adder benefit of the turbo. Your knock sensor(s) will be taking out all the ignition timing. The base Ecotec has 10:1 compression, while...

Re: Oil in coolant bottle

If the water pump seal leaks, the coolant leaks externally through a weep hole. (not like the Fords that leak it into the oil). Unless you plan on doing a 2000 mile trip or similar, I'd just keep an...

Re: Oil in coolant bottle

Water pump seals almost always "fail slowly" so I'll forecast that if it's failing, you'll get plenty of warning, assuming you do frequent inspections.

I always tell people a great way to...

Re: Oil in coolant bottle

Sounds positive. I'd keep driving and monitoring oil and coolant daily.

Re: Starting problem

No direct experience with this, but at that many miles, it could well be failing. You can get a Remy reman for 75 bucks ( plus core) on Rockauto.

Re: Ion won't start with spark and fuel

Zero compression says you have bent valves.

There's three options, I think

salvage yard cylinder head (lots of Ecotec powered cars have gone to the graveyard by now)

find a capable local...

Re: Oil in coolant bottle

Your tests indicate it's in good shape.
Any chance somebody inadvertently put some oil in the coolant reservoir?
Before I started taking the motor apart I'd clean that out first, top up the...

Re: 03 Saturn Ion Transmission

The 03 quad coupes with automatics had the CVT transmission.
The GM CVT had several weak points in the design and was only in production for a couple years.
I'm not sure what the availability of...

Re: A/C Pressure Transducer/Switch/Sensor

I just worked on my grandson's 2007 Ion. One thing I learned is that the electric fan DOES NOT come on when the A/C system pressure is too low, just like the compressor clutch does not come on.

I...

Re: 2006 Ion 3 transmission control module issues(?)

An erratic speed sensor can cause the controller to make all kinds of incorrect calculations and resulting commands so you may be good to go if it's running properly now.

Re: 2006 Ion 3 transmission control module issues(?)

Correct. It is shown in better detail in Figure 45 of the manual. It's a magnetic pickup reading the teeth on the sprocket. Since it's inside the trans, you would not expect corrosion. Possibly...

Re: Right Rear Frame Spring Mount Rotted Rust

Sounds like it's worth fixing. But I'd look closely at other parts of the structure also like the subframe attachments to the unibody. And of course the rear spring mount on the opposite side.

Re: Ion coling fan

62 bucks US.
I'd also consider hitting the pick-a-part junkyard. The Cobalt fan is not exactly the same but pretty similar.

Here's a pdf of the Hydramatic manual

Re: Brakes have to be pumped to work, pedal to floor

That's one failure I've never seen or heard of on GMs. Do you have any history on the car? Did somebody do a half-assed repair at some point? If those bolts are torqued to spec, they're not coming...

Re: Best wheel bearing brand?

I bought a Moog (used to be a good name for parts) for a Cadillac. Turned out to be the same dirtbag China part you can but for 60% less, but in a Moog box.

Re: Prestine 2003 Quad coupe with cvt-swap from mechanically perfect 04 sedan manual

It sounds like a decent plan, but realize you will put a lot of labor into this and wind up with a 19 year old car that the market isn't going to value much.

If the value is significant for you,...

Re: Ion 3 quad coupe trans.

There are a lot of possible interchange candidates from the GM family.
Cavalier, Cobalt, Pontiac G6, even some Saabs. Are we talking manual or automatic trans here? And what year Ion do you have?

Re: 2004 Saturn Ion Sedan-Compression test results VERY surprised

Those numbers do seem high but since you used two gauges it's likely correct. I think 190 is a more typical value.

Re: Ion 3 quad coupe trans.

No. The first gen Saturns use a Saturn specific trans.
The Ions use GM corporate transmissions.

Re: New catalytic converter, getting P0420

I'm surprised that somebody is selling converters that perform so poorly that they throw codes brand new. But it sure sounds like you got one. I wouldn't be shy about checking with tech support (if...
