Re: Clutch safety switch fun!

On my first Saturn (a 2002 SL1), years ago, the pushrod for the clutch pedal came out when I got into the car and accidentally got my left foot under the pedal. I leaned down and put the pushrod...

Re: Worn original keys and/or cylinder?

When I had a GM dealership cut me new keys from the VIN, they had to grind about 1/8" of length from the key after cutting to get it to work, but then I had no problems with it.

Re: new clutch checklist

My SL had just shy of 200,000 miles on it before the original clutch started slipping, so you may have quite a way to go.

Re: How to tell that you own a Saturn S

Checking your oil every 3 days or so is another symptom. It took me several months to get out of that habit after replacing my SL.

Re: PCV Valve and Grommet Replacement

I used the fixed orifice PCV valve for a few years and had no blockage issues.

Re: Oil drain plug gaskets

I used those on my 2002 SL (SOHC) and they worked fine.

Re: Bent Rim

That's what I did. A 2-lb. drilling hammer or mini-sledge works great.

Re: Bent Rim

Assuming you have steel wheels, yes, you can pound the bend out with a hammer. I had my right front get bent a couple of times hitting potholes, so I'd just take it off, lay it on the ground, then...

Re: 1998 sc2 vibration

The stumble at part throttle from a sticking EGR valve can feel like vibration too... might as well check that.

Re: 2000 SL2 problems

It will be close to 50-50 once you top off with distilled water.

Re: cannot remove the brake drum

Last time I had to remove a drum (2002 SL) it took me about 1/2 hour and a lot of light to moderate hammering on a flat wrecking bar set edge-on against the flange on the outside of the drum. It...

Re: Hesitation problem

Just for giggles, pull your EGR valve and check for carbon buildup keeping it from closing completely. It should throw a code if that's an issue but it's pretty easy to check anyway.

Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

Traded it in for a 2012 Ford Fiesta. I'm going to miss my little silver SL, but it's time for something newer in better condition. I didn't post much here but I thank all you gurus for all the tips...

Re: 2001 SL1 Window Switch

They are easy to remove and replace but a bit of a bear to take apart and clean. I managed to do it once with my (now ex-)wife's switch cluster and that kept it going for about a year or so. Next...

Re: Power windows motor, 2001 SL2

The switches are also known to go bad after a while. My (now ex-)wife's 2001 SL1 switch cluster has been replaced twice--first with one from a salvage yard, next with her old one which I'd cleaned...

Re: Rear wheels slide out on slippery surfaces

Also check to make sure neither rear brake is dragging, even slightly. I had a 1981 Ford Escort that was a ton of fun in snowy/icy corners because one rear wheel would "lock up" even if I was off...

Re: Vin cut key problem

Try filing or sanding about 1/8" off the tip of the key. I had to do that with my last VIN-cut key--had the same problem as you and this cured it. I think dealerships' key blanks are a little too...

Re: Driving on Ice

Steer in the direction you're actually going. If the tail swings out to the right (you rotate to the left), steer to the right so you keep your front tires pointed in the direction you're going, so...

My 2002 SL has air conditioning. Windows, locks, and mirrors are manual, of course.

Re: Crazy idea - twin engine Saturn

Car and Driver magazine did something similar with a Honda CRX in the mid-1980s if I remember right... called it a CR-X2 (x-squared). What cracked me up, though, was the company that was putting...

Re: Converting automatic windows to manual?

I may be too late with this answer, but in the case of my ex-wife's 2001 SL1 the front windows started acting up. I removed the switch cluster from the console, took it apart, cleaned the carbon off...

Re: Strut bar

I think the idea is that the zip tie would be pushed along the inner tube by the end of the outer tube when the strut towers flex and would stay where it ends up, so you could measure from the end of...
