Re: brake troubleshooting

One other thing to look for is failing rubber lines. They look OK but hold a little hydraulic pressure on the brakes. If they are the originals, I'd replace them.

Re: brake troubleshooting

Never seems too strong for me. I'd top it off to see if the light went out. If there is a leak it will continue to go down. If the levels were low for some other reason, the worst that will happen...

Re: Worried engine seized, but hopefully just the Starter

Not sure if that was for me or not, but no I haven't. For some reason this job seems a lot easier to me than it sounds on the forum.

Re: Intermittent long crank times when cold?

On my '98, I turn the key to the run position and wait for the pump to run and then stop. If you put your seatbelt on while you wait it is about the right amount of time. Then turn the key to start....

Re: Intermitent Starting

If the starter is making a click, but not spinning the motor at all, the starter is bad. Unlikely to be the ECTS or CPS.

Starter failures are somewhat common for the S series.

Re: Worried engine seized, but hopefully just the Starter

I screw the bolts in and out by hand, and just torque/break torque with the ratchet. On the top one, by hand means with a socket and extension but no ratchet.

Re: SC1 stalling

Like billr said, the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) is suspect. If you put the car on a scanner, and the temperature doesn't make sense, that can cause your starting issues. Also what do...

Re: No power to wheels

What brand clutch did you use? Our ebay stage 2 was grabby. We replaced it at 10,000 miles because it sucked.

Re: 1999 Saturn Sl2 question

I could not find the sequence in alldatadiy. Much like cgg17 said, use a sequence similar to the other picture. It's pretty low torque and probably not super critical.

Re: 1999 Saturn Sl2 question

89 in-lb sounds right. That is a DOHC motor.

Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

It's about 350 lbs of boat, and maybe a couple hundred lbs of trailer. Well under the 1000 lb tow rating but you know it's there!

Boat is a Hobie 16.

Re: What did you do to your S-Series today...

We use our SL2 as a tow vehicle. I used to tow my gliders with it, now we tow catamaran sailboats.

Re: No power to wheels

We put in a stage II clutch from ebay and it was horrible. Based upon recommendations from this forum, we went with a stock LUK clutch and it is awesome.

Re: No power to wheels

It's not uncommon for the passenger side shaft to fail under the damper thing. Happened to me once.

Re: Rear disc conversion

My impression is SKF is better than Timken these days. My SKF front bearings were not chinese.

Re: Worried engine seized, but hopefully just the Starter

I also vote starter. The top hidden bolt isn't bad. Use a socket with an extension. Remove the hidden bolt first, replace it last so the other bolt holds the starter.

Re: MP7 Transmission Lost All Gears

The axle usually fails without any apparent carnage. I think both ends are captured by the intermediate bearing. I'd jack up one side of the car at a time and see if you can spin the wheel while in...

Re: MP7 Transmission Lost All Gears

Check to see if your driveshaft has failed. Usually it is the passenger side. The car won't go anywhere but will shift through the gears. Happened on my 5 speed Saturn once.
