Re: return of the old transaxle (5 speed) fill plug removal trick

That trans design was done by Saab so the engr was probably Royal Institute instead of Harvard, LOL.

Re: return of the old transaxle (5 speed) fill plug removal trick

synthetic 75W-85 GL-4 is what the spec shows for this transmission.

Be very careful on that fill plug, making super sure that the tool is tight and won't round out the female hex.

Re: 2005 Saturn Ion 1 interchangeable parts

This might be a bit of a shade tree fix, but you might consider cutting out the bad section (I assume it's corroded) and splice in some pressure rated rubber line.

I did this on a power steering...

Re: Fuel Pump Service Port Mod

I've pulled tanks on several cars and pickups and didn't think it was all that difficult. Just make sure it's almost empty, not really that heavy, build a "cradle" out of random lumber that...

Re: L-Series Rough Terrain Upgrade

I'd vote for good tires (Michelin if you can afford them) perhaps a bit over the normal pressure, on steel rims (notice that cop cars mostly use steel rims instead of alloys, better resistance to...

Re: the old oil consumption trick on the L 4cyl ecotec

Oil's pretty cheap these days, and it looks like you're good with keeping it topped up so you don't have a low oil disaster. I've bought Costco Kirkland Dexos spec on sale for 11 bucks for 5 quart...

Re: 05 ion 2.2 need aftermarket exhaust manifold.

Are you looking for a direct replacement of the OE manifold, or a header design? Rockauto shows a bunch of OE types.

Re: Suspension Noise?

I had the same experience with Rockauto for Ion fronts.
I ordered Monroe struts, one was a nice looking Monroe made in Tennessee and the other a not very nice from China, in identical boxes. I...

Re: 2003 Saturn Ion....No Fresh Air

I believe there's a flapper door that switches between recirc and outside.

I've done troubleshooting on this problem in my old S10 pickup that used vacuum actuators, but I think the Ion uses an...

Re: 2005 Saturn Ion parking brake

You'll need to get under there and take a good look. You may need to pull the rear drums to inspect the attachment to the shoes.

Here's a YT on the rear drum parts...

Re: 2006 saturn ion automatic transmission

When you get a single cylinder code, it's good to just move existing parts from one cylinder to another to see if the problem follows the location change. That way you aren't buying stuff you might...

Re: Suspension Noise?

The L is a different config from the Ion, but on my Ion both rear springs were broken in the bottom coil close to the end of the spring. Since it's in a "pocket" you have to look closely.

Re: 2004 Saturn Ion 2.2 constant p0442 code

The smoke test is pretty much the "gold standard" for diagnosis on these.
You've changed almost all the (expensive) hard parts...how about the rubber lines themselves?

Re: 03 ion swirves like crazy

Consider taking it to a trustworthy shop that can put it up on the alignment rack and do a good alignment check/correction.

You should post this in the S series section, this is the Ion section which uses a different engine.

Re: Is my Saturn done?

If you walked away unhurt, it did its job well.
I'd be looking for another one, most likely.
I had rear damage like that on my 97 after getting tagged by a semi and spinning into the center cable...

Re: '03 L200 tranni surge issue...

The automatic transmission designs from the S series and the L series don't have much in common.

Re: 2005 trans

Over its model life the Ion used the ill-fated GM CVT, a capable Aisin 5-speed, and the GM 4T40/45 which was also a solid unit produced in the millions so it will be supported in the aftermarket for...

Re: L200 vs Ion, Which is better?

Since the Ion has a lot of common parts with the Cobalt (GM Delta platform) it might have better availability of some replacement stuff down the road. But the Ecotec engine and 4T40/5 trans was...

Re: Pot Hole can actually ruin a Saturn Vue Engine. Who knew?

I think this was a water submersion issue accentuated by the added depth of a pothole.
We used to do water-fording tests (4 feet depth) on military trucks and while the engines were fine sometimes...

Re: Lost a part while driving!!

Since both your sensors are intact, I'd guess this is a replacement exhaust part with additional bung for multiple model years? And the plug fell out.

The thread size is metric straight thread,...

Re: Pot Hole can actually ruin a Saturn Vue Engine. Who knew?

I'm going to speculate that because of bent valves due to the timing belt failure, only two cylinders had good compression. Just a guess. I know the Honda 3.5 is an interference engine.

Re: The College Car Build

An LS4/4T65 swap would be pretty impressive.
And I imagine they are pretty cheap from salvage because the block is different than the RWD version.
I'd be tempted to go with FWD only to limit...

Re: Windshield leak

FWIW windshields are held in with urethane (stronger bond) not silicone.

Before I spent the bucks on a new windshield that's probably 20% of the car value, I'd lay on 6 bucks worth of sealer.
