Re: Does activating the ABS really help get air out?

Wow, thanks for the very detailed explanation.

I asked this question because of 1) all of the talk (in repair manuals) about you shouldn't bleed rear calipers on a model with ABS (I've been doing...

Does activating the ABS really help get air out?

I finally got these brake lines replaced and I was able to get brake fluid out of every caliper but the brake pedal is still a bit low. Some people have said that they go out like on a gravel or dirt...

Re: What do you use to cap a cut brake line temporarily?

Exactly, no brake fluid puddles in the driveway. But seriously - just to keep the master cyl from emptying while I am fiddling with the brake lines upstream from the cut.

Re: What do you use to cap a cut brake line temporarily?

Metal brake line tubing. Location: anywhere you make a cut and you want to prevent the master cylinder from emptying out.

What do you use to cap a cut brake line temporarily?

Surprisingly I cannot find (or think) of anything. A tight rubber cap would be ideal if I had one.

Re: Why does Haynes say do not bleed rear calipers without a scan tool

Very much to my surprise. I got brake fluid out of every bleeder despite having let the master cylinder run empty for over a week. I tried to use my mighty vac hand vacuum on one of the rear lines...

Re: Why does Haynes say do not bleed rear calipers without a scan tool

When you are bleeding the master cylinder isn't that what you are doing: filling the reservoir and moving the piston back and forth.

I didn't follow what you said - fill the reservoir and "if need...

Re: Why does Haynes say do not bleed rear calipers without a scan tool

Well - my master cylinder has pretty much run dry. It should be interesting to see if I can get everything back to normal. I have the two rear bubble flare fittings off (that attach to the hoses.)...

Re: Why does Haynes say do not bleed rear calipers without a scan tool

Not that Iíve ever followed it, I never have, but I thought there was an order like right front, left rear, left front, right rear...some type of cross pattern. As I said I never did that but I think...

I see some serious sub-frame rust

My rust is on the drivers side "big flat piece" that curves down from the engine area. The passenger side is in perfect shape. I know sometimes these cancers set it and run wild. I saw some posts...

Why does Haynes say do not bleed rear calipers without a scan tool

I've had this car since 1994 and I've always bled the rear calipers. I have ABS but Haynes and other manuals say do not bleed the rear calipers since a mfg scan tool is needed.

That's not to say...

Re: I had to cut brake line at caliper hose...

I would actually love to replace all 4 lines completely - but I'm not sure where they go - do they come off the booster and if so where do they connect.

If only one could (still?) buy pre-formed...

Re: I had to cut brake line at caliper hose...

I figured this out :D

Bubble flare at the brake hose. Doh!

I thought it was something special. I've only done double flares before and I did not have any bubble flare nuts but now I see the...

Re: I had to cut brake line at caliper hose...

Yeah, I let PB Blaster soak in and then hit it with Mapp gas. No luck.

I was hoping to do all four wheels but I can leave the front ones if need be. Just not sure what to use for connecting the...

I had to cut brake line at caliper hose...

Can someone tell me what I should use to replace this fitting on the steel line that connects to the caliper hose. I'm thinking double flare with fitting on steel line and then to something like this...

Re: Where is the brake fluid leaking?

For posterity purposes I found this leak:

In the rear of the car in the metal hose section that goes across the width of the car and terminates at the left rear caliper. There is a clip that holds...

Re: Where is the brake fluid leaking?

Yes I agree, what you describe is what I want to do this weekend when my son arrives this weekend. Unfortunately, since I filled it I have not noticed any loss, nor is there a mark on the driveway,...

Re: Where is the brake fluid leaking?

I think for those that change their own brakes they know to remove the master cylinder cap, at a minimum, while spinning or pushing your caliper pistons back in.

So I am sure my brake pads or...

Re: Where is the brake fluid leaking?

Yes, I'm aware of that but I believe that if you topped if off on the last brake rotor/pad change that there would be sufficient fluid to not cause a brake light to come on. I added a significant...

Re: Where is the brake fluid leaking?

Did you replace the entire line or did you cut out the section and insert a new piece?

Thanks,
Ray

Where is the brake fluid leaking?

Losing fluid in the master cylinder, checked the fittings at the master cylinder and calipers, looked at the lines the best I can see but I do not see where this fluid is leaking.

I do not feel...

Re: What is a First or Second Production alternator

Snow melted - finally - got that DB Electrical alternator installed. That was a bit a job but I could do a second one much easier. Replaced the battery - all is good. My '94 lives again!!!

Thanks...
