Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Well if you ever want a true Dex-III (and it's pointless because it's not cheap) just buy the GM #88861800 fluid. Apparently they just continued to make their oringinal Dex-III fluid for the other...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I don't mean to keep this thread dragging on, but I felt I have more relevant information to those TAAT owners that choose to go with something less expensive than the Torque-Drive/TranSyn options.

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I'm assuming it would be a good idea to still continue to replace the filter every 30k after that? Maybe that's what your saying: sample and filter every 30k interval.

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I read in the Saturn literature to be careful using the filter magnet with aftermarket filters. Actually it sounds like you usually can't use the magnet, and that it would be dangerous. So keep that...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I was wrong, turns out they have a fluid (http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-12378515-TranSynd-Manual-Transmission/dp/B000QIV848) for it. But it sounds like it is rebottled Castrol Transynd, so you might...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

My understanding is you don't want to get the fluid from GM because they don't address the compatibility issue with the Allison transmission. GM still recommends Dex-VI. It is only Allison that...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Oh, I found a different post (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3014880&page=1) within that linked post

It doesn't mention the source, but when they talk...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Like the one person did with the MaxLife ATF, emailed Valvoline to confirm if it was ok with "viton" seals (assuming that is what maybe the TAAT uses).

Someone should do that with the Transynd and...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I knew the viscosity didn't seem to be the problem. In the thread, the source link is broken, but the worded it as "Dex 6 is thinner to start out but it only shears from approx 6.0 cSt down to 5.7...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Actual shear stability numbers are hard to come by, but I'm sure the nice Dex III fluids today have stability similar to Dex VI. This would make them end up with a higher viscosity.

What I'm...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Well, the ATF shears down naturally to a lower viscosity, but they already knew this. They just start with a higher viscosity out of the bottle with Dex III, and then after a few thousand miles, it...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

One thing's for sure, Dex VI does not extend the life of the pinion shaft.

I had a transmission that I replaced the pinion kit with new OEM about six years ago, used nothing but GM Dex VI and the...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

That's awesome. That implies they probably don't have the typical viscosity breakdown as normal Dex III does. Also it's really good it'll last, since that fluid won't be around forever. It's not like...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I wonder what would happen if you were getting your S-series auto transmission serviced under warranty after 2005. Did they continue to make Saturn Transaxle fluid until all the S-series warranties...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Ok, I'm still reading into this. What I've learned is that Dex III thins out considerably from use, and not much of it.

"Rather than beginning with a 7.5 cSt fluid and allowing a viscosity loss in...

I should have said "frowned upon by redneck mechanics". Plenty of other people like it.

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

My feeling is, it simply stems from Amsoil's marketing and distribution. Beyond that, I find most mechanics don't know hardly anything about oil, other than how to change it.

Ha, funny, they are...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I finally came across one with a higher viscosity, it has a whopping 8 cSt and is Dex IIIH specified.

Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle ATF - That seems to be the best Dex equivalent with...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I tried looking up the viscosity of the Castrol Transynd ATF earlier, and they don't seem to make it anymore. I think it might be called TRANSMAX™ FULL SYNTHETIC MULTI-VEHICLE now.

I think Castrol...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I wouldn't really recommend this, but what you could do is get the good Dex VI stuff, and add 12 oz. of Lucas Transmission Fix

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Those all have cSt @ 100ºC of 7.5 or less. They sound like the "gas mileage increasing fluid" mentioned above.

My friend found some new bottles of Saturn ATF in the trunk. Maybe they're worth some...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I think the Mobil 1 ATF might be too thin then. Possible the other Dex III fluids available are now naturally thinner too. The viscosity numbers at 100 degree C is not much different between common...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

I can't figure out the difference between switching to Dex-VI in a TAAT compared to something like a 4T45-E. They both have line pressure control, they both have shift adaptive functions. You have...

Re: Transmission fluid question beat to death

Well, on the TSB, if you look at the other cars besides the Saturn S-series that are excluded from the Dex VI usage in place of Dex III, they all have some other GM specified fluid (like T-VI for...
