P0741 converter lock up fail

For over a yr our '97 SL1 has randomly disengaged torque converter lockup & lit up the SEL. Couldn't find cause as there was no consistency as to when or where; sometimes would go weeks, then suddenly disengage repeatedly on a lazy 50 mile trip. Trans oil always full & looked good (slightly dark). 2 weeks ago decided to change the ATF & spin on due to mileage. Clean Dexron II doesn't contrast well on dipstick & was worried about overfill so didn't crowd the high level mark. Shifting & lockup seemed to improve but still had the occasional P0741. Started wondering if there wasn't air being sucked in by the pump so added a cup of ATF. Shifting & lockup immediately improved; after a few more trips & still the odd P0741 I added another cup. Dipstick now definitely registers overfill but latest 150 mile trip was trouble free & nothing exhaled fr trans. Was I imagining air in the hyd circuitry but just lucked out on solution? Does this match anyone else's experience? Thanks in advance!

Is that "Dexron II" a typo? Which is it, Dex II, III, or VI?

Re: P0741 converter lock up fail

Slight overfilling on Saturn S engine oil level is generally OK due to oil loss, but unless your transmission drain pan has a huge dent in the bottom (changing how your tranny dipstick reads the level) then overfilling the DEXRON III ATF is not good to do, due to extra pump pressure generated and the hot level increasing due to expansion.

The "typo" is in your post. I have NEVER seen it referred to as Dex; ALWAYS Dexron. This help?

What dent? SAAT case bottom is cast; "drain pan" rests on top. Did a 300 mile round trip today; no P0741 & no fluid loss either, expansion or otherwise. Nobody else had a P0741 that went away by adding ATF?

Re: P0741 converter lock up fail

If you put in Dexron II instead of III, drain it out & replace the spin on filter.
Saturn S cars must only use III and nothing else (but synthetics are OK).

Your opening post says the word "Clean Dexron II" is what billr was questioning..... His Dex comment is correct, as he wanted to know what tranny fluid you were using...now we can presume to know you may have put the wrong II fluid in your trans, IF, IF by showing us the Texaco photo, we are to presume that's what you used. HOW old is that can of fluid anyway? Gotta be ancient.

So the TAAT dipstick is wrong? It states Dexron IIE. Not sure what "E" means but went ahead w/ the Dexron II I had in a 20L pail. Now that fluid level looks correct (slightly above full) we've had no issues; shifts better, TC engages/disengages MUCH better & NO CODES. Got the car @ 107K; now 196K. Close to 1K on the Dexron II now in all kinds of driving. Latest was a 500K @ 120+ kph.
