White Saturn Astra XR progress

It's about time I got started on a progress thread. I've been sitting on these pictures for a long time, so the whole write up is gonna take a while to do.

It all started when I bought a base 5dr Astra XE in June 2011, manual trans, cd30 with BID, plain steering wheel with no radio controls. Boy, did I ever get the modding bug! Right away I knew I wanted to brand it something other than Saturn. The Opel blitz was too simple looking for me, so the chicken holding a flag won me over. By the time I traded it in July 2012 for a 3dr Astra XR I had gotten it to this point:

Vauxhall facelift grille, plastidipped black
Chevrolet Cobalt SS gunmetal 18" wheels, Insignia centre caps
Drilled rotors, ceramic pads, gunmetal painted calipers, white decals

Full blue SMD interior conversion
VXMMI gen 1, blue SMDs
Leather 3-door steering wheel, had to get the wheel controls enabled with tech2
Removed the Saturn airbag emblem, fitted the chrome insert from a Vaux centre cap

Insignia washer jets, deristricted airbox, homemade 2.5" PVC intake
Fitted a 1-1/4" hitch carrier, with a hitch mounted bike rack

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Fast forward to July 2012, I really started looking at the 3 door Astra XR more and more, just something about the look of a Astra Nurburgring and Arctic VXR that I couldn't get out of my head. In under 2 weeks I removed every mod I could from the 5 door (incl rotors) and traded it in for a white 3 door :) Super happy with the deal I got on it, and immediately realized this was the one I should have gotten in the first place.
The 3-door lines are amazing, plus this meant I could start my work on an Astra VXR replica
It came with the CDC40 GID combo and upgraded speakers.

The modding started that first weeked, doing everything the second time around was soooo much faster. I fitted my Vauxhall grille, new style rear emblem, HIDs, put in my front component speakers, leather XR3 steering wheel, and did the emblem mod on the airbag:

Cutting out the emblem like this leaves the airbag unmarked. I've seen plenty of airbags that look like the emblem was pried off with a screwdriver.. ugh.

Love the new style griffin

This write up is a work in progress, there's lots more, but it's a lot to do all at once! Comments are welcome :)

Wow, that is so impressive! I have my Astra rebadged as Vauxhall as well but I don't have the steering wheel done. When you have time, can you write up exactly what you did to change it out? I'm not that handy but I hate looking at that Saturn logo all the time!!!

Well done!!!! I love the new Vauxhall logo too...jealous!!!

Haha wowww really?? I can't believe it was that close! My girlfriend was with me that day and actually pointed out the black one, but I recall it cost more and I was totally set on the white one. We drove up from Oakville so I didn't want to leave empty handed, but the guy sure made me work to get the trade in price I wanted! A blue 3door would have been my second color choice if this one fell through.

I haven't seen any other white 3doors come up on autotrader since then, and my white XE 5 door didn't stick around for too long either, it was gone pretty quick. Someone must have appreciated the blue LEDs haha. And they listed my 5 door for the same price I paid for the XR 3 door, super weird.

Haha I have had nothing but problems with that dealership! And hey if you wanna do LEDs and hids for the new car. Nicholas _p is driving down to the shop I go to in Brampton next Friday and is getting his car done! If you need any parts it's cheaper with a group discount

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Bad really? Do you keep going back to them for service? I haven't been back since I drove the car home in July, I do all my own work. Actually the battery died the very next day, but my local GMC dealership gave me a new one and billed it to Macmaster because it was the certified pre-owned GM vehicle warranty thing.

Thanks for the offer, where in Brampton is the shop? But I already put in 6000k HIDs and LEDs the first weekend I had the car. Since then I've tried 5000k and 4300k bulbs just to see the color diffs. I'm going back to 5000k when I install my fancy new 25W cree bulbs.

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Going right along, over the next month I installed the cross drilled rotors and ceramic pads from my 5 door, and painted the calipers gunmetal grey again, only this time I went with red Vauxhall decals instead :D Looks a lot better than white did. Same drill as before; mask off the calipers and spray hi-temp primer, engine enamel, caliper clear, decals, and more clear over the decals.

Shortly after, I finally found a seller in the States that had the Insignia VXR 18" replica wheels, so I bought them immediately! I found them through a Saab forum of all places. Mounted some BEEFY 245/40/18 dunlop sp1 tires, and the result is phenomenal :) arches are filled in a bit more, and the width looks cool :D Here's a comparison shot with the stock 225/45/17. They are wiiide!

And the wheels (at this time I hadn't mounted the Insignia center caps)

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Debadged the rear for a day-long detailing session at a friend's house, complete snowfoam, rotary, and DA work, all defects, fallout, and swirls removed and the paint looks brand new :) Badges went back on shortly after though, Astras are too rare here and mine needs badges!

When putting the badges on I chose the placement of the limited run 2009 Astras, which had the lettering above the chrome strip. They stand out more against the paint, so that's where I put them, along with a GTC badge. Also note the stubby carbon fibre antenna, it doesn't do anything but I've had no problems using the aerial base by itself essentially, reception is plenty fine wherever I've been.

Now, I like buttons and it was bugging me that our headlight switches don't have rear foglamp or leveling dials (see below), so I bought aswitch unit from a breaker (wrecker) in the UK just to look cool :) The new buttons do nothing, other than look good. Installed shots later on, when I cover the SMD conversion.

Blanks :(

New unit :)

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

I then received these parts from ebay uk :) It was the cheapest way to piece together a VXR grille. The primed V's were far more expensive than the chrome inserts, and I knew I'd be able to paint it fine.

Old facelift grille, I sold this one after I confirmed I was able to mount the VXR grille on our facelift bumpers.

I hadn't painted the new V at this point, so I mounted only the honeycomb backing for a while.

Starting the slot modification for our "facelift" bumpers. Our Astras have the same bumper on the 3 door and 5 door versions, which are based on UK facelift 5 door bumpers.

I'm really impressed with the progress! I'm in love with those rims! I just go my Eibach pro springs! Putting them on soon ! What's next for your car?

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Nice, where did you get the Eibachs from?

VXR bumpers, sideskirts, spoiler in the spring, probably sell my VXMMI head unit and try something new, maybe get sportlines for it too

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Some guy bought em and then ended up selling his astra they were brand new and I or em for 100$! Haha and awesome what's a headunit?

Re: White Saturn Astra XR progress

Dang, awesome deal, I remember seeing those on Kijiji last fall! I thought they sold.

The VXMMI is the touchscreen radio/nav I have in one of my first few pics up there, it's plug and play for our Astras.

Where did you get those sick VXR rims?

We need a GTA meet this spring!

I did a full Vauxhall conversion too with the exception of the air bag emblem. Now I'm rethinking about it again...
