License Plate Bracket

I just bought a 1996 SL2 that does not have a front license plate bracket. Ohio requires a front plate, so I need a bracket. I will be going to the junkyard this weekend. Does anyone know what years will work?

If you don't want to bother with a bracket, you can get some wall mollys at a hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes etc., and attach the plate directly to the bumper. As you tighten up the screw in the middle after you slip it through the plate and bumper, it will sperad out in the back of the bumpr like a spider. If the hole in the plate is too large, just place a washer over the hole first. If you decide to get the bracket, you can attach it and plate the same way as it is unlikely the bracket will come with the useable plastic pins.

Any bracket off of a 96+ SL will fit.

I thought about attaching it straight to the bumper but I need to go to the junkyard anyway, so I figured I would look for one. It's a "Pick and Pull" so prices are cheap, but they are not very helpful as far as interchange info.

If you attach it directly, you'll have to poke two new holes in the bumper. The holes for the bracket are, of course, in a different location than the holes for the plate.

A bracket from any '96-'02 SL, SL1, SL2, SW1, SW2 will fit. They're attached with a special heavy-duty non-reversable version of those "center-pin" rivets. About your only hope to remove it is to take a knife and cut the heads off the rivets. Last time I was at the yard, I found one with one rivet missing (there are three holding it), so I just yanked on it. Fortunately, it destroyed the two rivets, and did no damage to the bracket or the bumper. I attached it to my car with hollow-wall mollys as described above.

Mine were easily removed by pressing IN on the center pin 'til it popped (I used a small Torx driver)--did that on all 3 pins, then just pulled the bracket off. The pins could then be pushed back through so they were sticking out the "proper" way for installation. (I dropped my plate bracket into my recycling bin after removal, or I'd be happy to send it.)
