Engine Swap 1995 Saturn SL2
 
I have a 1995 Saturn SL2 with a blown head gasket. I've been looking on ebay and found a few engines from $400-$1000 but most of them are from 1996-1999. Are these engines compatible? Also, what about 1993-1994 engines? They all have a 7 as the 8th digit on the VIN like mine. Does this make a difference?

My saturn has the 1.9L DOHC I4 with a manual transmission.

I think your target years for a full engine swap would be 92-98. Once you get to '99 the head changes including the exhaust manifold.

You may want to keep your old exhaust manifold. The new one may not bolt to your downpipe. You definitely want to keep your old aluminum cam cover.

Others with more direct experience may chime in.

If it was me I'd get a junkyard motor or rebuild what I've got. You are paying a premium on eBay. $1000 for a Saturn motor when you can buy a whole car for $500?

'91-'92 crankshafts can't be used in '93+, the timing gear is funky. '91-'93ish also have a funky bolt pattern to the valve cover that isn't found on '93ish-'98.

'95 for the easiest swap into '95

'93-'94 are nearly identical to '95 but you'll have to put the vac EGR gasket on the elec EGR and redrill the holes to match the vac egr gasket (or use the adapter found on some '94's)

'96-'98 also has the elec EGR but lacks the 2nd ECTS port so you'll have to drill & tap that (use upper radiator hose if the engine is assembled, head if it's being rebuilt). It's not as scary as it sounds, stuff a rag down the pipe past where you plan on putting the sensor, then vacuum it out. If you get a '98 you'll have to swap the IM from the '95, they changed too much with the fuel system in '98.

'91-'98 exhaust manifolds interchange on the head but there were 3 styles and you have to keep the downpipe with the style. '91-'92 got a 4-2-1 header, '93-'98 Fed emission's are identical and '96-'98 got the option of Cali Emission's with a coffee can sized pre-cat in the manifold.

Try to avoid '99-'02, they could be made to work but you'd really want a rear or t-bone hit full parts car to do it.

So really it sounds like 95-98 would be the best bet. With a 96-98 you need to add an ECTS. That seems ok.

An engine at LKQ is $200 with a $75 core charge.

Thanks for the feedback! Most of the info I found on this made me nervous that if I didn't find a 95 motor it would be incompatible, but the info you all gave me is much more assuring. I'll start contacting my local junkyards to see what I can find within those years. I live in Fort Worth, TX so if anyone knows the best junkyards to go to that would be greatly appreciated!

Also... If you run a later engine as a replacement - use the injectors from the 95.

The plugs are the same. The impedence is different - and if I recall correctly - you can burn things up by mixing early (pre 95) with 96 and later....

I ran into this in a swap on a 96....

Just replacing the head gasket seems way easier... just my opinion

If you are going to drop the drivetrain - it isn' t.

I will not do a head gasket in the car. I have a 2 post lift and cradles for supporting the drivetrain unit.

I hate working in a tight uncomfortable position. To me it is just too easy to drop the drivetrain - and give easy access to the engine...

For someone with the tools and facilities yeah makes sense. Most folks don't have that kind of equipment though.

Either way a headgasket on one of these isn't that big of a job. I replaced my recently in the car and tear down was about 2 hrs, 2 hrs clean up, and about 3hrs reassembly. Should note that I'm over the top picky when I put one back together so clean up and assy times might seem high to some.
