Saturn Craigslist Deal of the Day!

I've been putting good Saturn craigslist deals on the "Bonehead" thread, and they really don't belong there. Better to put them in their own thread. I'll start.

1998 Saturn SC 73,000 miles - $500 (Carrboro)

"1998 Saturn SC, 73,000 miles, silver, 2-door, automatic transmission, working AC, working CD player, grey cloth interior, driver- and passenger-side airbags, engine is in good working condition, valid NC inspection.
Hit a deer in 2008, which crumpled the hood (see photos), but I have been driving it ever since, and the damage is cosmetic only."

2000 SL2 Saturn Priced to Sell - $1300 (Tukwila)

Our family is expanding and 4-door sedans aren't working for us anymore. I bought this 5-speed manual in 2004 with 64,000 miles on it. I swear to you I've never had a significant problem with it--it's a great car. It now has only 114,000 miles on it. I've given it regular oil changes and kept it running great. Kelly Blue Book says if it was in good condition I could reasonably sell it for $2,500. In my opinion it is in fair condition, which should go for $1,770.

I say it's "fair" and I'm selling it "as is" for $1,300 and here is why:

It's in need of a tune up. The car doesn't have any real problems that I can see, it's just running a little rough and needs a tune up. There is slight damage to the left front corner, which I provided a picture of. And the last thing is that the tabs are expired, expired in May. I honestly think if I was patient I could get more for it, but I don't care, I just want to sell it so we can get a car that fits our families needs.

Call, email, or preferably text if you have any questions--I stay up late. We want a small SUV or van, so if you're interested in trading and you have a decent vehicle we'd be interested in that too.

(pics look decent)

"It won't start" covers a lot of ground. He doesn't say if it's cranking but not starting, starter not engaging, dead battery, or what. For $500 it would be worth it to somebody who's interested and in the area taking a closer look at it to see if it's something simple.

"I have a 94 Saturn SC 2 1.9 L DOHC 4 Cyl , its a Manual 5 speed, 140,000 miles, with Sunroof, non electric windows and locks. Tinted windows. Everything under the hood is BRAND NEW, EVERYTHING has been replaced, new motor, exhaust, radiator, sensors, Fuel pump, all fuses, new computer, brakes, brake pads, rotors, ignition, alternator, clutch, thermostat, water pump, water pump gasket, radiator cap etc etc. Like I said everything is pretty much brand new, $3000 has been put into this car JUST in parts. The ONLY thing wrong with it, is ONE spark plug needs to be replaced and the right mirror is missing due to a minor accident. The interior is not in the best condition but there are no rips in the seats, there is just a crack in the dash and the steering wheel column is messed up because it had to be taken apart to replace the ignition. This is a PREFECT car for a teenager in high school or a beginner driver, this car has lasted me YEARS and still runs like a champ! Very reliable and safe vehicle! Cant beat this offer! Please call 757-206-0840 (cell) and ASK for SHANE, or call 757-723-4753 (house) and ask for Shane. Need to sell by Thursday 6/30/11!!!!"

It has a vacuum leak in one of the vacuum lines replace the line and you have a solid running vehicle. im looking for a truck im a landscaper by trade and this gas saver just isn't fitting what i need. b eing it stalls out after about 10 mins it needs to be towed "

Kinda sounds like a CPS, not a vac leak...

It must have been for sale for quite a while since the pics that were obviously taken just for the ad are from the dead of winter.

He probably had his price too high before and that's why it hasn't sold, but he might want to take new ones of it all spiffed up and in the summer. That way the car will look better in the pics and the ad won't look stale. Right or wrong, a stale ad gives the impression it's not selling because there's something wrong with it, or it's just not desirable for some reason.

Follow-up:

Very clean, small peeling in spoiler, nothing else. Everything works. Power windows & locks, AC, PS.

No leaks, no smoke clouds, Temp Gauge is at the right spot.

Upper motor mount is cracked and I can stick my fingers in slightly, almost no shaking.

No SES light, smooth revving.

Tranny fluid is clean, but a slight burnt smell, revs up between 2nd & 3rd gear (Auto Tranny).

Can't find anything wrong with it!! He'll take $1700 cash.

Hummm... don't need it, but nice to have, then sell for more later (?)

Here's a '93 SL2 with only 87K miles and all records since purchase. The asking price of $2600 is a little more than you cheapskates like to spend on a Saturn ;) but I still think it's a good deal, especially when compared with any comparable new car.

The problem with this car is simply the price, otherwise I'd get it, and trans swap it.

I respectfully disagree.

In our market, $500-$800 gets you a non-runner. This one has electrical problems and more than 225K miles, asking $800...
http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/2493537432.html

This one had a blown head gasket or cracked head and they drove it until it seized, asking $450...
http://columbus.craigslist.org/pts/2452844409.html

I think a good-running, good-looking SL2 with service history, cold air, and only 87K miles on it is worth $2000-$2300, even if it is almost 20 years old. I could get another eight years and 100K out of that car - maybe more - and I bet all I'd have to fix during that time is the radiator+water pump and alternator.

I've bought several sub $500 S-Series Saturns. Many are still on the road. And its been about three years since I purchased my last S-Series. I bought a 1993 SW2 in 2002 for $500 and it in my driveway right now. My father drives it every day. Bought a 1994 SL2 in 2004 for $500. My grandfather drove it for a couple years, then my brother and now my son's mother has it. I picked up a 2001 SC2 two years ago for $1700 and a 1999 SC2 in 2005 for $1000. Those are still driven as well and in great shape.

If you really would pay $2000-$2300 for a S-Series that age in good shape. I have some $$$ to make off of you.

Also all the links you posted dont really mean anything. Just because they're asking that amount, it doesnt mean they'll get it.

You can disagree all you want, I am talking about different markets. Over here, its not what its worth, period. There is no disagreeing, just check classifieds in other areas like mine.. They are worth less here, period.

I typed "Saturn SL" on Kijiji for Ontario and this was easily spotted on the first page.

185K KMs is about 110K miles or so...

OK, you guys win. A good deal on an S-series in the Midwest apparently isn't a good deal elsewhere.
If you really would pay $2000-$2300 for a S-Series that age in good shape. I have some $$$ to make off of you.
I would if I didn't already have a good S-series. Most of the 1st-gens around here suffer from frame rust, and I'm guessing the one you'd sell me doesn't.

Same here.
You can find the odd good one, (I found an immaculate subframe for my wagon) but most have a good amount of rot going on.

I was lucky enough to find this under a 2001 SL2 at a wreckers about 40 mins from where I live. I couldn't believe the condition (zero rust, not even a spec) and I do live in the SW Ontario rust belt. No clue where this baby came from!

yeah really, and most of the first gens here in northern KY seem to sound like rice rockets, diesels, lawn mowers, etc.. :hmm:

and how is it that places like Ontario and Cali-land where a running S-series goes for a few Franklins? is it due to all the heavy emissions, Saturns being worst on resale, or...?

as for that one asking for ten Franklins for a blown head (gasket?), I'd kindly offer them half of that.

Yeah. Around here rust is a color, not a condition of metal.

Yes, that's exactly the kind of deal I look for! When I have money to buy that is.
