Damaged compressor

This resulted from lack of oil lubrication when R134a is allowed to run low. The chamber walls (left) are still plain aluminum but the steel vanes were no longer lubed enough and began shaving off metal until this concoction (oil and aluminum shavings) contaminated and destroyed the compressor. A complete disassembly and flush of the entire system was needed before rebuilding was done. Two of five vanes cracked.
