As you're probably aware, the United States auto industry is in dire need of help getting through these tough economic times. There's a lot of speculation about the financial and economic impact on the U.S. if any of the "Big 3" automakers were to collapse.

I hope you had a nice (and filling) Thanksgiving holiday. It's been awhile since the last update on the front page, but it was for a good reason. My wife and a took a little vacation with family, and then I managed to come down with a bad cold during our drive back home somewhere along I-95 in South Carolina.

A few weeks ago, in another episode of "Flashback Friday," I posted some not-so-well-known Saturn trivia bits. Folks seemed to enjoy taking a look back at Saturn while testing their knowledge of both the company and cars of yesterday. As a result of the feedback, I've compiled another list of "Did You Know?" Saturn trivia facts for your viewing pleasure.

Owner Stories: Having Fun with My 1998 SC2

Well I walked in to my local used car lot and asked the salesman for a car that was sporty, got good gas mileage, and was front wheel drive because I needed something better to drive in the snow than my Camaro Z28). He showed me a variety of imports, and I test drove a few of them including an Eclipse Spyder, Jetta, and Civic to name a few. They were all overpriced and had poor performance.

Flashback Friday: 1994 Saturn Cycling Calendar

Saturn has long been a big proponent of an active lifestyle. Today, you'll find Saturn supporting marathons all over the country, but years ago Saturn sponsored a cycling team. According to the 1994 Saturn Cycling Calendar (cover pictured above), the team originally "came together in 1992" and was made up of "a collection of young amateur cyclists from around the country." By then end of their first year in competition, the team "competed in more than 100 races and compiled 53 wins."

Two days before my son Wesley's 16th birthday, the events of my life were about to dash a dream. It was October 5th 2002, and there was something that I had always wanted to do for both my sons: present them with a car, wrapped in a big bow, on their respective 16th birthdays.

I'm on my second Saturn now. My first one was a 1997 Dark Green SL2 four-door sedan. It wasn't in the best condition when I bought it (from CarMax) in December 2003 with 83,000 miles on the odometer, but I liked it and decided to put performance brake pads, rotors, and plug wires on it.

Owner Story: Economic Driving Tips

I should start this writeup by saying that this report is mostly relevant to drivers of the 3.6L V6 Saturn Aura XR with the 6-speed automatic transmission. I have been having a great couple of weeks, folks. I reset the average miles per gallon (MPG) calculator on my DashHawk at the beginning of July and looked down today to discover an average all city fuel economy of 28.9 MPG.

AutoBlogGreen is running a poll asking readers to choose their "Green Car of the Year", based on the Green Car Journal's five finalists already selected. GCJ will announce their best pick, and will present the chosen manufacturer with the coveted 2009 Green Car of the Year trophy during the LA Auto Show later this month. For now, the '09 Saturn Vue 2-Mode Hybrid could use your help battling it out with the other finalists - the Ford Fusion hybrid, the BMW 335d, the VW Jetta TDI and the Smart ForTwo - in ABG's poll.

Owner Story: Take Care of Your Saturns, Because They Take Care of You

I have my first new car ever, and I love it: a 2006 Saturn Vue. It isn't my first Saturn, though. I had a 1995 Saturn SL2 that I drove into the ground. I bought it used, on the cheap, since it was a rebuild from a wreck. About 7400 original miles were on the odometer, and at $8700 it was too good to pass up, since it was only three years old when I bought it.

On April 5th, 2006, I was on my way to pick up my girlfriend from her job. I approached one of the busy intersections in our area, and as I went through the intersection, my car was suddenly going sideways, being pushed into oncoming traffic. A car had run their red light, and ended up t-boning my L200 at 40-50 miles per hour.

Todd Kaho, from consumer magazine Green Car Journal, recently had an opportunity to drive one of the first 2009 Saturn 2-Mode Hybrid sport-utilities on the streets outside of General Motors' proving ground in Milford, Michigan. Mr. Kaho was not only impressed with the Vue's on-road performance, but with its real-world fuel economy.

Owner Story: One Happy Saturn Family

In September of 2003, I was the very satisfied owner of a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am. That car had been with me for quite a long time and had seen a fair amount of action. Sure, it wasn't a perfect car. In fact, the poor thing had a computer problem that sometimes caused the engine to stall at idle. This presented some interesting intersection situations, but that's another story entirely.

Owner Story: My Spring Hill Homecoming... 14 Years Too Late

I had a rare opportunity to visit the Spring Hill assembly plant this week. This was business and technical trip - not a tour. As I understand it, they are no longer giving tours. Perhaps that will change when the new SUV type vehicle (Chevrolet Traverse) makes it to mass market. I can't say I was excited to see the new vehicle, but I'm really biased toward plastic Saturns.

Flashback Friday: the SaturnFans.com Virtual Polymer Body-Side Panel Demonstration

Over the years, one of Saturn's most impressive features was their innovative plastic polymer body panels that it used to cloth it's cars in. The panels resisted damage from small dents, dings, and minor bumps - they proved to be very popular among Saturn owners. The panels simply absorbed the impact, and bounced back into their original form.

R. Feeman from CarGurus.com recently profiled the 2009 Saturn Aura based on information from "multiple professional and user reviews available on the web." In addition to the Aura's "fuel economy, handling, smooth ride, and safety features," the website says that drivers "like the Aura's value, braking, handling, and appearance, both inside and out."
