Workers Strike Astra Plant, Production Resumes Three Hours Later

Production of the Saturn and Opel Astra resumed around 1:30pm today following a brief three hour strike that halted assembly of GM's popular compacts. "It looks like we're in the clear," a Saturn insider told SaturnFans.com this afternoon. The spontaneous strike momentarily suspended production of the Saturn Astra at a critical time.

Saturn 'Corsa' May be Built in Spring Hill

General Motors VP of global product development, Bob Lutz, recently told Automotive News in an interview at the Paris Motor Show that the company plans to offer a version of its next-generation Opel Corsa in the United States. The vehicle will be badged as a Saturn and lead GM's two-pronged approach to the growing small car segment.

Wilmington Builds First Batch of Turbo Skys

SaturnFans.com has learned that GM's Wilmington Assembly plant has built its first batch of turbocharged Kappa roadsters for testing and evaluation purposes. The seven pre-production vehicles – four Saturn Sky Red Lines and three Pontiac Solstice GXPs – were reportedly manufactured over the past two weeks. Production of saleable units is not expected for at least another month or two.

Start of Production Dates for 2007 Saturn Aura, Ion, Vue

GM Canada's Fleet and Commercial website has published start of production dates for the 2007 Saturn Aura midsize car, Ion sedan and quad coupe small cars, and the Vue sport-utility.

Ion Production to Move to Lordstown

The Plain Dealer reported this weekend that General Motors plans to move production of the Saturn Ion from Spring Hill, Tennessee to Lordstown, Ohio. The plan, which has been rumored for months, has not been officially announced or confirmed by GM. The Lordstown Assembly Plant currently builds the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac Pursuit (which is only sold in Canada) compact cars.

Aura Concept Unveiled to Workers at Fairfax Plant

Even though production of Saturn Aura sedan isn't scheduled to start until the summer of 2006, the company unveiled a concept version of the car to UAW workers at General Motors' Fairfax, Kansas assembly plant yesterday. Reaction to the new model was very positive. "We're excited about it," Dave Peterson, president of United Auto Workers Local 31, told the Associated Press.

Curve Approved for Production

The Car Connection reports this morning that General Motors has already approved the Saturn Curve sports coupe concept for production. The confirmation came from GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz less than a week after the Curve was unveiled. The sports coupe will be built alongside the 2006 Pontiac Solstice at GM's Wilmington Assembly Plant in Delaware. Pricing is expected to be around $20,000.
