Plug-In Vue Hybrid Previewed at "Plug-In 2008" Convention

GMnext contributor Matt Kelly talked to Larry Nitz, GM's executive director of powertrain engineering, at "Plug-In 2008" in San Jose, California last month about the upcoming Saturn Vue Plug-In Hybrid. He was excited by what he heard and saw. "The vehicle's lithium-ion battery will allow it to double its fuel economy for about 20 miles," Kelly wrote on the GMnext blog.

2008 Saturn Vue Hybrid Should Attract Buyers

Bryan Laviolette from the Flint Journal tested the 2008 Saturn Vue Hybrid and was impressed with the efficient, versatile SUV. He wrote in his review that he liked the Vue's "spiffy good looks, silky-smooth powertrain, and cool interior styling." After driving the vehicle for awhile he concluded: "GM finally decides to try building desirable vehicles rather than those that seem destined for the discount rack the instant they hit the street."

Veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker and journalist Gina Spadafori from DogCars.com released their best not-a-large-SUV vehicle picks for dog owners. "Big sports-utility vehicles have been the dog-haulers of choice for years, along with minivans," they wrote. "But with gas prices so high, SUV sales are stalled as people look for smaller vehicles. Earlier this week, Marty Hogan, Saturn Vue 2-Mode Hybrid chief engineer posted an interesting story over at ImSaturn.com about the brake system that was developed for the dual-mode Vue. "The 2009 Vue 2 Mode Hybrid will be equipped with an advanced brake system that stops or slows the vehicle using traditional friction braking, regenerative braking, or any mixture in between," he wrote.

Details Emerge About the 2nd-Generation GM Mild Hybrid System

Edmunds.com's Green Car Advisor reports that GM "has developed a second-generation mild hybrid system that for the first time takes advantage of powerful, lightweight lithium ion batteries to provide more power and a slight increase in fuel economy." The new system will reportedly be available in 2010 Saturns "with a lot of growth potential" across GM's worldwide product line, according to Stephan Poulos, GM's global chief engineer for hybrid systems.

GM posted a rather promising update last week concerning the development of its upcoming Saturn Vue Plug-In Hybrid.  With all of the media attention surrounding the General's other plug-in electric hybrid car, the Chevrolet Volt, its easy to forget about Saturn's equally impressive electrified compact sport-utility. General Motors announced today that it will collaborate with the nonprofit Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to accelerate the introduction of plug-in electric vehicles, like the Chevrolet Volt and Saturn Vue 2-Mode Plug-in Hybrid. The EPRI is made up of more than 30 of the top electric utilities in the United States and Canada.
