Retailers Tell the Saturn Story in New Ads

Tags:

Kim McGill, director of advertising and promotions for Saturn: The unique experience of buying and owning a Saturn always been anchored by the honest and respectful way customers are treated by Saturn retailers. That foundation shines in our new television ads that will appear widely this week during the college basketball tournament. The format of the ads is simple. There's no blaring music or cars zipping down twisting mountain roads. Instead, it's just a Saturn retailer talking about our brand and our products.

Saturn Approached by GM Competitors About Selling Cars Under the Saturn Brand

David Barkholz from Automotive News: Steve Girsky, long-time industry consultant who is leading GM's task force, declined to name which automakers have talked to the group. He called the inquiries "informal." Girsky said in an interview today that the task force is assessing whether a spin-off could procure enough product and sell enough vehicles to make it viable for the 400 Saturn dealers now operating.

Hot on the heels of Rick Wagoner's announcement yesterday evening that Saturn faces an uncertain future at General Motors, comes news that plans have already been set in motion to separate the import-fighting brand from the faltering auto giant. The resulting entity will be a new, independent car company that's able to source cars from other automakers built to Saturn's specifications.

Breaking News: Saturn Continues to Explore Options, Faces Shutdown in 2011 if No Viable Alternative Found

General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced during a news conference this evening that Saturn will remain in operation through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products (2010-11). In the interim, should Saturn retailers as a group or other investors present a plan that would allow a spin off or sale of Saturn Distribution Corporation, GM would be open to any such possibility. If a spin off or sale does not occur, it is GM's intention to phase out the Saturn brand at the end of the current product lifecycle.

Spied: 2010 Opel Astra Spotted Sans Clothing

Ray Wert from Jalopnik: The next-generation 2010 Opel Astra, otherwise known as the 2010 Vauxhall Astra and sometimes going by the name 2011 Saturn Astra (if Saturn survives), was spotted completely undisguised in Germany outside GM's testing facilities. The revised Astra is scheduled to go on sale at the end of this year and although a styling prototype, the vehicle caught in the camera viewfinder clearly shows off the Astra's new lines on the outside.

Retailers Will Likely See a Consolidated List of Options for Saturn this Week

Jamie LaReau from Automotive News: Late this week, Saturn dealers likely will get a narrowed-down list of options for the troubled General Motors brand. Last week, GM marketing chief Mark LaNeve said those options include "everything from a new dualing pattern to a spinoff to a partnership to an outright sale." In a two-day meeting late last week, GM and members of the Saturn Franchise Operations Team narrowed the options.

It will also include GM's first front-wheel-drive two-mode transmission and a total driving range of more than 500 miles per tank of gas.

Could Saturn be Integrated into Buick-Pontiac-GMC?

From All Cars All the Time: If GM were to pair Saturn with BPG, it is my belief that Saturn would aim for smaller vehicles. Corsa, Meriva, and Astra are names that come to mind when looking over Opel's lineup. Now you might argue that the Astra hasn't done very well here in the States, however I maintain that it isn't so much the car's fault as it was a hurried, low cost effort to bring it here and a scant marketing budget once the car arrived.

No 2009 Astra for U.S. Customers, 2010 Model Due Later this Year with New Options

If you've been on the lookout for a 2009 Saturn Astra, you can stop looking (that is unless you live in Canada, where Saturn is reportedly selling them). Due to the large number of 2008 Astras still in stock - about 5,500 units - Saturn is canceling plans to build a '09 model for the U.S. market.
