2002 SL2
Default which coolant is best for saturn 2002 sl2?

Hi there,

which coolant is best for saturn 2002 sl2, dex-cool or regular green coolant?

Saturn's manual says that it recommends the dex-cool. But online a lot of people complained about it. can anyone give your opinions about it? thanks.

Van

Madpogue's opinions are pretty good. He already stated that as long as it was dex-cool compatible, the color makes no difference. Based on what I've read here in the last few months, it isn't that important. As long as you change it out regularly, but I'm no expert.

From what I've read (note: NOT direct experience), the "bad stuff" you hear about dex-cool is in cars with a true "overflow" bottle. That is, there's a radiator cap with a pressure release, which draws from and dumps to a bottle that's NOT under pressure. Supposedly something bad happens to the coolant sitting at atmospheric pressure. Our cars have no radiator cap; the only outside world interface (presuming no leaks!) is the reservoir cap, and the reservoir is part of the pressurized system. Other drawbacks of this kind of system aside, as I understand it, dex-cool is fine in systems of this kind.

The best kind is the kind that you put into the toilet when you use it, LOL.

Nah, I'm kidding, seriously don't put urine in your radiator, LOL....and you really wouldn't want brown turdy chunks floating in it either.

DEX-COOL is fine, you can use the regular green stuff, but if you already have DEX-COOL in there, I'd stick with that, or you *can* mix the Prestone mixes with any anti-freeze in there. If you use the green stuff, you just have to flush it out more often. Just make sure you don't use only anti-freeze, you are supposed to mix it with water, or you can buy the pre-mixed stuff. You'd be amazed at how many times I've seen morons pour pure anti-freeze into the reservoir/radiator....when the back of the bottle clearly says to mix it with water. It's supposed to be a 50/50 mix, but some people do a 60(anti-freeze)/40(water) mix, which is also fine.

If you're a car begging for your life, wouldn't you want someone to add fluids?

use Dexcool like the Saturn handbook says. if you don't and something bad happens, your Saturn retailer will blame it on you not using Dexcool when you take it in for service.

from what i understand the dex-cool is designed for aluminum blocks. it's more corrosion resistant than the green coolant. the bottom line is you should use what the manufacturer recommends....

i was never a fan of overflow bottles. the coolant in the bottles tends to get dirty & the walls of the bottles get slimy with deposits & eventually those contaminants get in the radiator causing corrosion. i think the saturn's system is much better designed to not allow this from happening. my "overflow" bottle was clean inside after 7 years....
