My '02 SL never fails to amaze me... . Made a 199 mile run north of Detroit and back, with maybe 25-30 miles city tossed in. Rarely ran under 80, and ended up at 5.001 gal used, or 39.8mpg. Not the best it's ever done, but not bad for a car with 100k on the clock.

I have a 2000 SL2 AUTOMATIC and I got 39mpg, almost 40mpg when I went to Spring Hill, TN this past November....this was there and back...so I got it BOTH times, and I was going around 80mph also. I don't know why people swear these cars get better gas mileage at 55mph-65mph, because that's the best I've ever gotten so far and it seems my car gets better gas mileage at slightly higher speeds. The best I got doing 55-65mph was 33/34mpg....and that was on the trip from here to Richmond, VA I used to make all the time when I lived up there. I'm still amazed at how easy it is for me to reach 80mph and not know it and all of a sudden I look down at the speedometer and see I'm going 80mph in a 55mph zone and I'm like, "OH S***!", LOL.

I just made a run up to Tail of the Dragon this past weekend. On the way up I averaged 37.6 mpg running at 80 mph in my 00 SL2 manual. I also have a AEM cai and a header and running 17's that are just a little shorter than the stock tires.
I filled up just before I got to the Dragon and ran it quite a few times and then filled up after I left and averaged 27.3 on the Dragon. ... Jeff http://www.cardomain.com/id/jegstersl2 http://www.myspace.com/jegstersl2

Amazingly enough, I don't see many (any?) new cars out there that will match the hwy mileage of a Saturn... . BTW, my mileage "secrets" include:
Mobil 1 - engine/transmission Tires - +10% overinflated K&N airfilter (which probably needs to be recharged) Is there a new car out there that will match my 100k+, 5 year old, domestic, non-hybrid Saturn?

And now for a little humor in this thread.
An American study A 2006 study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Americans drink an average of 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles per gallon. Not Bad. ... Jeff http://www.cardomain.com/id/jegstersl2 http://www.myspace.com/jegstersl2

Hybrids are just a "bridge" until we can get to a hydrogen/fuel cell future... . Hybrids ugly? I actually think the Prius (current model) isn't entirely bad looking.
Did another 90%+ hwy run today to Dayton, A/C half the day, and did 262 miles w/ 6.5gals. of go juice. I would happily buy another SL new today, if one was available. I can't understand why someone hasn't been able to produce something with similar room and safety/strength that can hit high 30's mpg.

Just got back from a 3100km round trip. I averaged 40mpg with 2 people in the car, ac half the time and lots of mountains. Through the mountains I got 38mpg doing between 70mph and 80mph. I got the worst mileage through VA doing 60 on smaller highways and the best on Interstates doing 70-75mph, up to 80. 55 is a load of crap. I find my best is about 70-75 depending on with the wind or against.

There are different suggestions that people will make to improve MPG. None have really made a significant impact (for me) EXCEPT for increased PSI in your tires. I use to follow the suggested PSI (30 front/26 rear) on my car for the last 14 years. Recently (after reading suggestions on this web site) I increased the PSI to 36 front/34 rear. I'm on my third tank of gas since then so I'm starting to get in a reliable amount of data.
Findings: On 30/26 psi my avg MPG for 85% HWY/15% City driving was ~34 On 36/34 psi my avg MPG for 85% HWY/15% City driving was ~38 There have been suggestions given for why recommended PSI should be used, but nothing so far that gives me good reason to go back. I'm pretty sure I'll stay at my new psi settings. It will save me about $130/year on gas which isn't a ton of money, but it can buy me a few more spark plugs, oil changes, PVC valve, serpentine belt, etc. ![]() ... 2002 SL2 Manual - new in November, 2001 Sticker: $13,800 As of 12/29/09: 131,981 Miles Total $ spent excluding oil changes & gas: Maintenance: $1388 Repairs: $613

I rarely get less than 50mpg highway. I never go over 70mph. Usually I go up hills at 50-55mph and down at top out around 70mph downhill. I average 60-62mph. At 75-80mph I get 40-42mpg. The numbers don't lie slow down and you'll get better mileage. Check out my gaslog on gassavers.org. Wedsday night I drove 80 miles round trip and averaged 51.7mpg. I can get 35mpg city with no eoc's. With eoc's I can generally 50mpg. ... 02 sl sport 5 spd got 50mpg?

I get over 50mpg on the highway too, the only way this is true is if you use a british gallon which is approx. 20% bigger than an American gallon at 3.78L
![]() 50mpg is impossible in any saturn without excessive changes.
