Default Toyota Dropped price on Prius to compete w/ Aura?

Was just watching a commercial Toyota released, referring to the fact it offers more hybrids than any other brand. Then at the end of the commercial, they announced they have lowered the price of the Prius to $22,175. Thatís a little more than $500 bucks cheaper than the Aura Greenline. Was this price change strategy on Toyota's part to compete with Aura?

I doubt it. The larger issue for them is they're trying to boost volume, but the tax credit for a Toyota hybrid just got reduced from half to a quarter of the full amount, effectively raising the price of a prius by about $750. Price cuts would counteract this.

If I'm not mistaken, sales on the Prius took a dive once gas prices started going back down, hence the price drop.

More likely to compete with the 4 cylinder Accord. A lower price makes the Hybrid vs economy gas car math work out a bit better.
I don't think people realize how much styling helps the Prius sell.

I believe that the Corolla line and the Prius line will eventually merge and become one. Toyota had originally slated the Hybrid system to be used for the Corolla but Toyota execs were afraid of ruining the Corolla name if the hybrid was a flop. Expect Prius production to move to the US also.

They're selling the 4-cyl Accord for $18,700. This makes selling an Aura XE a tough sale.

We felt the XE drove better than the 4 cyl accord and not priced much more after gm supplier discount.

If you only want a stripped model yes. No if you option out the Accord to equal the XE. The SE model Accord goes for about 22K. 20K after discount
It does have a stick though, same with the Fusion

My site will similarly equip the cars and compare their prices.

On the Prius, sales are hardly in a slump.

First three months of 2006: 22,123
First three months of 2007: 39,682

I could use a few slumps like that.

Toyota is very focused on growth. They don't use incentives simply as a rearguard action to maintain sales. Instead, they often use incentives to push sales higher and higher. They're probably testing just how high Prius sales can be pushed. They've been adding capacity for the car.

In a few months the Prius will have to be listed with the new EPA ratings that are something like 9 mpg lower than for the '07 model. This surely would have reduced sales if they didn't do something.

Even with the new ratings the Prius' fuel economy will look good.

Everything's going down. 9 mpg will simply be proportional. The Dodge Avenger I test drove last week had 16/26 ratings. Under the 2007 system those numbers would have been 19/28.

Are you serious? The GL is not the version thats going to boost Aura sales. It will be the day that Aura can sell in the $18k range that sales will start to go up. I don't mean rebates and discounts either. Saturn has one chance to cash in on a customer, and thats the price someone can see on the window. If someone walks on the lot on Sunday or after hour and sees the price, they will not be back.

Aura needs a GM employee discount. Yes they will lose money, but it will be to get the Aura on the street for people to ask about.

Between Prius sales and the Camry hydrid you talking 24k+. Thats almost 5 times Aura sales.

$1000 cash back and 0% financing. Wait a minute. That is a $3000 discount on a $21000 car. Isn't that an $18000 car? The XE is already well enough equipped and priced right at the $20995 list for a 6. Competition has 4s.

The Prius is not selling as well as it once did. People are finally wising up, doing the math, and realizing that Hybrids are almost always are MORE expensive vehicle to operate than a similiarly equiped economy car. If the Aura was available as a 4cylinder 5 speed, the pretend hybrid "Greenline" would be an expensive mute point "economy" wise. (Total cost of ownership)

Well....based on the sales numbers, and those of the Aura's competators, I guess the vast majority of car buyers must be "stupid" by your definition.

I do the vast majority of my car shopping on SUNDAY, when the dealerships are CLOSED, and the salesvultures roosted. If I see a lot full of cars with dealer addons, bumpstickers, "market value adjustments" or other gimickry, I will NOT be back to that dealer.

Sales of the Prius are up as pointed out by Mkaresh. The sales aren't news anymore because production capacity is high enough that Toyota is able to meet demand.
