2006 VUE 3.5L
Default Trouble Starting 2006 FWD V6

Does anyone else have the problem in which the key will not turn when you try to start your Vue? I've been having this problem since I bought the car in July of '06 and it only seems to be getting worse...is it a falty starter? A couple of times I've actually sat in my car for up to 10 minutes before I could get the key to turn. Someone told me they had the same problem in their old Camero. I have to really crank the wheel back and forth while turing the key and even then it can take a minute or so. It doesn't always do this, but it seems to be worse when the Vue has been sitting in direct sunlight, causing the inside to be pretty warm. If I take the car in for service what can they do about it?

Please help!

That would be the GM wheel lock
1.) try not to hit the wheel getting in and out of the car
2.) when it happens remove the key and pull the wheel side to side
then try again
3.)it's camaro not camero

This happens whether or not the wheel is locked or not. It's just totally frustrating. I owned a 2003 FWD 4cyl. and never had this problem once in that car. I guess I'll just live with it until I take my car in for service when something else major goes wrong.

I like the way the key doesn't want to come out any too easily also. It's like you have to fight with it to give you the key back!

My dealer told me that they DID have some problems with the Vue ignition switches. I don't think there was ever a recall , but there MIGHT be a TSB. I would check with a dealer. Maybe they can help you.

Uh-oh, I got that too.
It's like a catch when I try to put the key in, and start the car?
Then when I try to get the key out?
That's not good....

I had the problem developing with my ignition switch so I had them replace the ignition switch barrel after a new key failed to solve the problem.. Problem solved. The last thing you want is to break or damage the key. When the keys get old the groves for the tumblers wear and sometimes a new key will solve the problem.

I had the opposite problem. I would take the key out, and it would not lock and it would ding as though I had left my key in the ignition. It didn't happen all the time, but luckily it happened to the service guy when I took it in. They replaced the cylinder I believe.

Try a liberal squirt of graphite in the key slot and see if that helps.
A small tube doesn't cost too much. $1 - $2...

There is a TSB for it, where they remove the lock cylinder, clean and lubricate with a special grease, then reinstall. It usually fixes it the first time.

My Vue had a similar problem, twice. A new key cut by the Saturn of West 78 dealership using their own snipper tool solved it. Another time I could remove the key while the engine was running. New key solved that too.

The Saturn keys seem to be made of a soft brass which wears quickly. Better for the key to wear than the ignition lock/switch. After 124K miles and a zillion starts you could expect the key to wear out. Check it out!

My 12K 06 had the same problem. NOT related to having the wheel turned and NOT fixed with silicon lubricant. Dealer replaced the cylinder and it works perfect so far. I feel for you. I'd take it in.
