Default 2003 Saturn Ion Service vehicle light

I just bought a 2003 Saturn ion 2 with 70,000 miles it seem to run well. The problem I have is the service vehicle light is illumated when the car is cold and you turn to the run position. The car doesn't have to be started for the light to come on.When I push the odometer button the light goes away. After I get rid of the light it never comes on when the vehicle is running. The car runs well and have had no problems besides the light.Once the car has been driven and is warm you can turn the car off and back on and the light doesn't return till after the car has been sitting for a while.Any Ideas ?thanks for everyones help.

Good thread. My car will do this every once in a while and it is not consistent. I believe I was told that only Saturn can diagnose the problems where the service light comes on in the odometer queue. However, the engine light in the dash is OBDII and can be diagnosed by anyone. I haven't been concerned because I think most serious parameters are being monitored by the OBDII sensors and the check engine light will illuminate. We need a Saturn tech!!

Look in the owners manual page 159, it tells you why the light is on, and it has nothing to do with the keyfob. If you don't have an owners manual it would be a good idea to go on e-bay and buy one. In short your car is telling you it needs the attention of a service technician. Ignore your car and you get what you get.

I responded to a thread that was up front and at the top of the page. I do not look at the dates thinking old threads become dead threads. It must be the site ............

Its not the site. This thread never died and the OP never followed up. I think you responded to a newbies posting for the first time that also missed the date when this thread was first posted.........

Of course, I agree with you 100%. If someone wants to drop relevant posts in an old thread, sure go ahead. The whole idea of the forums is a place to share ideas and get some help.

8+ years.... and I was drawn to this thread. Was hoping there was a "reasonable" off the shelf scanner or upgrade for my ELM5 Compact... just so I'm prepared for the time and money I may need for the "second opinion" and repair.

Going to test the OPs observation that after a warm up the Service Vehicle warning goes away.

After all the issues I have been having, I decided to buy a OBDII connector. For 10 bucks I have saved myself a ton of money. Every problem that I have had I was able to relatively cheaply fix. At least 5 issues that came up, I have fixed. From faulty ignition coil wiring and coils to faulty thermostat.

A good investment to fix most Emissions Control/Engine Performance problems... But I suspect this may need more then a typical OBDII code reader. Figure the no "Service Vehicle" warning may go away when Warm just so it doesn't annoy the Driver repeatedly throughout the day...

I have a PC program that came with a USB-OBDII adapter for about 40 bucks on amazon, and then got a Bluetooth OBDII adapter, so I can use my phone with an app (Torque Pro).

its more of a convenience item, as it saves time of having to go to the nearest autoparts store to check it, or dealership.
the app and program I use also provide other info other than just supplying codes

Intermittent problem happened to me. It was the coil wires. The connector comes loose, triggers engine warning light. Connection good, light goes off. And this makes sense for warming engine and it goes out. Read the OBDII when the engine is cold and it comes on. This will point you in the direction you need to go. This light isn't coming on for no reason, even if it does go off when the engine warms up.

Just to clarify. I'm taking the Original thread literally. A "Service Vehicle" Code displayed on the Instrument Panel's Digital Display is different from the Engine Light that means you need to diagnose Emissions/Engine problems. My OBDII Scanner isn't likely to read that kind of code.

Same here. Went with an USB OBDII Scanner.(Back in 2011) For the Cost and Features, I got a lot more then a basic stand-alone unit offered.

In Snagglepusses initial posts he says, "The problem I have is the service vehicle light is illuminated.". I am assuming he means the "check engine" light.

GM, in their infinite wisdom, or lack of it, decided to use different terms as warning messages and indicators change. For Ions, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp/MIL is the check engine light(CEL)/service engine soon(SES) light/indicator as shown on the wiring diagram. My guess is the IPC displaying "Service Vehicle" would be the wrench indicator - not an emissions related issue. From the service manual; The IPC displays the SERVICE VEHICLE message when it receives a request from any module because of a detected problem. - geek speak for a burned out bulb?

I don't know their logic with it.
I got a "Service Vehicle" message on the dash, plugged my obdi scanner in, and nothing came up.
Brought it to my buddies shop, he plugged his scanner in (don't remember what he has) and it showed a code for the oil pressure sensor and my thermostat.
But the CEL did not light up, and yes, the fuse was good as are the bulbs.

...
I'm just a guy that enjoys my Ions.
Try Google, first. Then ask.
