Dizzy Replacing Front Wheel Bearing

Hi - my first post on here, shame it had to be newbish -
I've never undertaken the process of removing the front hub assembly on any car, let alone my SC2's.

I'm lacking in any real tools for this job and was wondering if I need anything out of the ordinary (a list of tools would be the best, as I can just make sure I have everything before I drive 30 minutes to my parents, where I can take my car apart and hopefully not realize that I'm needing some special tool for the job.

I plan on taking the hub to saturn to get new bearings pressed in, so I dont believe I need any thing for such a task.

Much appreciated,
Brian

If you are just pulling the hub, then all you need is a 19mm to take the wheel off, an 18mm for the ball joint nut, 18mm socket and rachet for the tie rod end, I believe a 21mm socket for the strut bolts, then a 14mm and a 18mm for the brake caliper and bracket.

If you plan to press it out yourself you'll need a set of C-clip pliers and a press.

??? Don't they sell the bearing with the lug ass'y attached? I never had to deal with pressing out the individual bearings on any of my GM FWD cars.

Waitaminit -- don't you also need a 30mm (and a bigeffin' breaker bar) for the "big nut" on the driveshaft?

You'll need a breaker bar and 30mm socket.

I'll add a ball joint separator and pliers to pull out the cotter pins(probably should be replaced with new ones). I think the strut bolts were 18 or 19.

I think the bearings are separate because of the order they are assembled. I don't think there is a knuckle assembly available with all the parts pressed in.

You can buy the whole hub assembly complete, and it's ready to go, for about 80.00. Don't need to have anything pressed in on those. This one is for your 97 SC2

That looks like the box of parts my store showed me. Nothing was pressed together. The 3rd part not shown is the knuckle and I pressed the bearing into it first and then the hub into that assembly(hense the parts being separate). I would have bought that assembly if I could get it already pressed in.

Someone mentioned that the hub kit is for someone who keeps driving with the bad bearing and then ruins the hub. Perhaps if the bearing seizes and the hub spins on the inside race.

The nuts on my 1999 SL1 for the tie rod end and lower ball joint both require a 16MM wrench.

You can buy the complete already pressed in assembly for the rear wheels, but the front wheel bearings (and the spindle) have to be pressed in

Thanks T-daddy ! Should I do both sides at once? (I'm the only owner, 125K miles on it.)

(I'm hearing the same sound as my old FWD Cutlass Ciera had years ago, so I suspect the bearing is out of lube, or otherwise going to fail on the Saturn.)

Sorry I haven't posted for years, the car is just so darn reliable.

Correct. The normal GM hub assy in a good quailty can run well over $100 where as the Saturn bearing that has to be pressed in/out can be had for less than $40.

With the number of times I've replaced mine in well over 1/2 million miles I'll take the saturn set-up over the std GM set-up anytime.

i've installed 3 bearings, 1 drivers and 2 passengers. The first passengers side lasted less than a year, second is still going strong.

I've yet to get north of 150k and the std gm hubs.
