Default Size of stock saturn exhaust piping??

I was changing the oil last night and took a quick look at the piping. I didn't have a way to measure it, but I thought it looked like it may have been 2 inches. Is that correct?

The reason I ask is that I am thinking about putting on some 2.25 or 2.5 inch crush bent exhaust piping with a resonator and performance muffler. But if the stock is mandrel bent (is it?) and 2 inches I can't imagine the crush pipe being much less restrictive.

If the stock is 2 inches and mandrel bent and a 2.25 or 2.5 cruch bent is not going to produce much more flow, then I am just going to put a less restrictive muffler on the stock piping and let it be.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

the stock pipe is 1-3/4 (1.75) inches. a 2-1/4 (2.25) cat-back is plenty big enough

Stock from the flex-pipe to the end of the glasspack is 2''. It then shrinks down to 1 5/8's or something like that before the muffler.

2.25" crush will not produce much more, true.... but 2.5'' crushbent will flow almost as well (from what I was told) as a 2.25'' mandrel bent. It's also a lot cheaper.

this guy in illinois i know has 3" crush-bent on his 98 SW2m. flows better then the 2.25 or 2.5 mandrel

he also has 91-92 header, real apexi n1 muffler, random tech high-flow cat on his exhuast. sunset orange paint, dark tinting, i love his wagon.

wow that just seems way too big

i was kinda thinking my 2.25 crush was too big, with out a header it kinda is, but with the header on there it works out nicely... so from my experience i would say if u dont plan to install a header go with 2" crush, and 2.25 only if u are installing a header. (imo)

mods i still need to do:

struts that can handle H&R race springs

Free is the best performing exhaust on the planet.

I went 2.5 mandrel because the cat/mufflers I bought were 2.5. I doubt I gained anything in going that big. 2.25 would have been fine and the bigger pipe weighs more. But I just wanted the whole thing to be the same size all the way through.

I wouldn't stress about size. 2.25 to 2.5 crushed or mandrel works just fine. Do what you can afford and don't worry about it too much because there isn't much power there anyhow.

Don't worry, i saw it. 2.25" mandrel is believed to flow as well as 2.50 crush bent, so you are correct

Arrow Re: Size of stock saturn exhaust piping??

Interesting you ask as I just did my exhaust on my '01 SL1. The stock sizing is 1.75". Don't just cut the pipe, just buy a cat-back; thermalrd.com makes one. I had a fart can on my exhaust for five minutes because it was behind the bumper and the sound bounced off the bumper back and the trunk acted like a resonator; the inside of the car was unbearibly loud and I noticed no difference. One reaosn for no results was that my engine is only an 8-valve. The other reason for no results is that 1.75" piping is so restrictive that even replacing the muffler with a straight-through-design muffler or even straight pipe will make no difference. I switched back to stock exhaust and everything was quiet and I no longer I had to wear ear plugs to drive my car.
I can go on for hours so if you need to know more you can email me at mpcastaldo@yahoo.com.

I'd like to see how he routed that 3" pipe around the rear suspension.

you'd have to pinch it there to fit. maybe you could bash the floorboard with a hammer to get the room. as it was, they had to drop the rear crossmember on my car to get the 2.25" installed properly. not much room back there.

i did ask them if it was possible to mount it like a subaru (under the crossmember) without causing any other issues and they weren't sure but were willing to try if i paid for it. no thanks. not this time...

my guy had no problem doing mine, he just bent the pipe around the axle in a seperate peice to be welded to the rest of the catback. he did have to set it up there and see how it fit, go back and make a couple bends a little farther and stuff like that, but he did that to even make sure the tip was straight.

slightly off topic, but do you guys know what the diameter of the cat-conv outlet is? I'm looking to make my own cat-back in a welding class and need to find a proper flange to fit the one on the cat.
