Default OBD Code: P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

So right after my last post the other day regarding my rpm revs, I'm now "shuddering" my way down the highway. Did some research on here regarding Ox sensor, EGR, & ECTS replacement, then took it to Advanced for a scan:

P0301
Cylinder 1
Misfire Detected

Is this something as simple as new plugs and wires? Or one of the 3 issues above?

Thanks!
-Matt

If you have a high idle. This could be your problem.

No high idle (other than when I first crank up in the morning, but settles down after a minute).

The problem is during acceleration: hesitating, buck-ing, whatever you want to call it where the car feels like it's not getting gas and shuddering.

I'm thinking I'll start with new plugs and wires, since I probably need those anyway. The dealership said most likely the ECTS is bad and that they "fix those all the time on older models". Only issue is the sensor is $20 and the "harness" the guy said I'd need is $23, and probably minimum 1.5 hrs of work so I'm looking at a $200 minimum job for something that there is a DIY thread for on here.

Only other thing I can think of is a new coil.

Check for oil in the spark plug wells from a leaking camcover gasket. Just pull the spark plug wires out and see if theres oil down there. Thats the most common reason for a misfire.

Low:

Is that the same issue as the "intake manifold gasket" leak I've seen on here?

Sorry if that's a dumb question.

Nope, completly different. THe camcover or valve cover sits on top of the engine, the intake manifold is on the back of the engine.

Just to add a correction here. This car is not one that is likely to get that manifold leak by cylinder 1. Those were the SOHCs. His sig says SW2. That's a DOHC. You can see Wolfman's guide to troubleshooting this problem here.

Good call, pulled the wire boot off #1 and there is oil down in there!
Now, is the leaky cam cover gasket something that's going to cost me out the wazzoo?

BarnOwl:
Wolfman's guide is correct in that it's only during accel and "hill climbing" (although around here, it's just exit/on ramps). My initial reaction was that the fuel injectors are clogged, as I had the same thing happen in my old GMC truck long ago (i.e. same herky-jerky engine). I hope it's not the EGR, since the Saturn dealer charges $172 for the part alone!

^^^to add to my above reply:

Just read Wolfman's how-to on cam gasket replacement.
Now my question is: is this something I can do with moderate skills?
Or should I just take it to the dealership?

I would say someone with less then moderate skill can do it.

The gasket is $20.48.

Ya, it's not hard, just take your time, and make sure it's cleaner than clean.

sounds good.

i'm going to pick up the gasket set from the dealership tomorrow ($38... eh, whatever) and some new plugs (NOT Bosch Plats, I know!) and wires from Advance and give it a go.

is it recommended i use RTV with the gasket? some say yes, some no.

(probably pick up a new ECTS while i'm there too.)

Only a small bead on the joint where the timing chain cover meets the head.

Default Update: The Morning After

Let the car sit overnight before cranking and other than having to figure out the "LOC" code for my stereo, no problems I can feel.

Drove approx. 15 miles to school, 65 mph, and up 6 floors of an inclined parking garage w/ no hesistations! Knock on wood!

Thanks everyone for your help, I still think I'm going to replace the ECTS since I already bought it, but that will be another weekend.

Will post if any problems arise, of course

Look in the How-To Library. There's instructions for unlocking that radio there too. Consider the ECTS preventive maintenance.
