Default 2003 VUE shift linkage

My son called from college and said he can't shift into any gear. Seems the shifter and tranny are not on speaking terms. Anyone had a similar problem and any suggestions on repair? Looking for ideas before I make the 150 mile service call...

Dave,

Thanks for the input. My son sent a photo showing the clip had indeed separated from the shifter. Is it difficult to replace the cables? Any tips?

It looks like I have a shift linkage problem.

First Item: When in reverse and I let off the clutch it was like I was in neutral. After a couple of tries going in and out of reverse, it finally worked.

Second Item: While going from second to third, the transmission stick went limp, meaning when you out it where first is and tap it, it drops down to where second is.

Third: The VUE is stuck in 2nd gear. I had to drive 2 miles to my house this way. No matter what I did, it is in second gear.

If this is the shift linkage how much did it cost for repair? My extended warranty should cover it. AAA will tow it.

I will be calling on Monday to make an appointment.

1. I can not remove the gear knob. It does not come off.
2. As you can see my gear shift is not attached to anything
3. I found this piece of plastic inside.

Is this what is referred to as the shift linkage?????

2006 VUE 3.5L
Default Re: 2003 VUE shift linkage

There is NO shift-linkage in your Vue 5 speed. It is controlled by encapulated cables that have plasitc connectors at the ends.

These are VERY COMMON failure points for ALL 5-speed Vues.

They are not terribly expensive themselves, but the labour to install them can get pricey. The connectors cannot be replaced individually, so the entire cable must be replaced when the connector fails.

I have not done one myself, so I cannot comment on what is involved and how difficult it is.

Tow it to any garage and have them fix it.

The ends on the shifter cables (inside the car, have not had to do anything with the ends at the trans so don't know if they are the same) can be replaced and are availible seperately from the shifter cables.
If you look at the cables you will see that the end of the cable has groves. these are used to hiold the end on.
In the picture just ahead of your finger there is a clip that can be lifted up to unlock the end from the cable. So remove the end, install the new end and then lock the shifter into the adjust position. This should neutral and then move the clip at the front of the shift lever forward so that the shifter is locked. Now install the end piece to cable lock clip to lock the cable to the end piece. Move the shifter lock back out and you should be good to go.

I was able to get the VUE into Reverse and back it into the street. It was flat bed towed to the Saturn dealer. I purchased an aftermarket warranty, and according to the items covered, I am good. The tow was free via AAA.

I will let know the cost and parts that needed to replaced when it gets done.

Fixed today:

Replaced:

Gear shift cable retainer broken. Replaced to correct.
Part looks to be $24.54 labor $135.49.

Kind of hard to read as it was put through as a warranty claim.

All is well!

2004 VUE 2.2L
Default Re: 2003 VUE shift linkage

I lost my shift end. My select cable still worked. And, of course, this happened on my way to the store. I was stuck in third gear. But, I bought the end piece for $37.xx. Took me 15 minutes to install, and I was also able to put my shifter into a more comfy position for me. The piece that gets replaced also allows you to adjust where center is.

For those that need to know:
What I did was pull the center top piece (Where the wndow switches are) off. Next, I spun the shifter retaining ring off. There's an o-ring you have to watch out for! Make sure you reinstall it! This allowed me to lift and move the ends for better gripping and manuvering. I then slipped a small screwdriver in and lift the retaining clip off and pulled on the broken end. Installation is reverse of removal. Not hard at all. When you install the new end, you can make it sit further on or off to set the postion of the shifter. I set mine a bit more into the 2nd gear postion so it's not as far a reach for 5th gear.

Next thing I'm gonna do is modify a B&M short shifter for my VUE that's for a Cobalt/Ion/G6. They have a lift ring for the reverse lock-out.
