Default Rust inhilitor or not on new VUE?

Hi Folks,

I am a fresh new member and happy to be here.

I ordered a 6-cyl VUE on Friday and seeing that this is my first Saturn ever I was wondering if it was necessary to use rust inhibitors like Rust Check on this vehicle.

I live in Toronto, Canada and the salt play havoc on car bodies, however only the hood, roof and tailgate on the VUE is metal.

What have previous Saturn owners in northern climates done in the past, and how has the vehicle held up whether it was rust checked or not.

Thanks for any help you may offer.

Love this Forum......

Cheers.

If they make the VUE like they made my '95 SL2, you are in for a good long ride.

I've been under the car many times and have seen no rust at all.

I live in Virginia and Maryland, and drive in salty slush every winter.

Canada is a cool country. Lots of UN work, lots of good folks up there.

I dont think I would spend extra on that. I know my 2001 has no rust and my 91 SL2 saturn has only a small amount of rust where i scratched the paint off hitting a bump on the underside which i could easily sand off in less than a minute and repaint. that cars 11 years old and no rust. Save your money. I'm in Indiana so we have some hard winters and a lot of salt.

I'm not sure if it is the in the Saturn owner's manuals but I have read others that additional rustproofing especially if not done correctly will cause more rusing. Saturn I believe has a 6yr /100K warranty against rust through. Unless you have an L (Which has metal rear quater panels) the areas that come in the most contact with Salt are plastic (ex. Fenders doors). I wash the underside of my car as often as I can at a self wash during the winter to clear any salt away. Each spring take the garden hose and do the same. I live in an area that snow somewhat (Lower NY) and they use Salt. The 1993 Prizim had no rust.

The saturn frame is galvanized so it will not rust, but if you scratch it, that protective coating is removed and it will rust. I put an undercoating on my car becuase is provides an extra pad of cushioning to keep the coating intact. You just can't avoid rock chips and the odd scrape. Undercoating is not that expensive and even helps to reduce road noise, so I would definitely do it, especially in Toronto. You probably don't need paint sealant, since the fenders and other trouble spots are all plastic.

I've got a 92 SL2 with 316,000kms, only places with rust are scratches where the coating has come off.

My dads car was a 1987 Celeberty. He sold it in 1990. No rust. My wifes Honda is going on 12 years old some rust rear quater panel some small bubbles. I saw it up on a rack. No rust on the underside. Look at your manual and see what it says about rustproofing and such.
