Default Fair price to install an engine?

Thanks all for all previous advice. You guys are the best!

I am wondering, if I were to provide an engine, what would be a fair price for someone to put it into my car?

Thanks!

Alldata lists 12.7 hrs to replace an engine which includes moving parts from one engine to the other. That also assumes some level of experience beyond the average DIYer.

I guess the cost depends a lot on where you are and where you go. Some shops in some locations charge in the $100/hr range so you'd be looking at $1200. If you have a buddy that does engine swaps he might do it for beer money. Not sure that helps any but I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Perhaps calling around in the Yellow pages will give you a better idea.

If your talking about just dropping the new engine into a car with no engine in it already. I'd say $600.... But if there is already one in and has to be pulled out, then the price would be double.

12.7 hours??!!?? I could see if its your first time. But for someone who's done it before, it can be done if half that time.

Huh? No. A friend of a co worker who works out of his truck changed out the engine (or rebuilt it - he speaks spanish, so there is a communication barrier and he may be dishonest) at any rate, I paid about $1050 all together, not counting the new timing chain set and motor mounts I bought) So in all, I paid about $1400.

I think I got ripped, but am not sure. I was only hoping for a fair to good price.

Took him 3 weeks to do it too. Every day was like, I will be there tomorrow and then no show.

Says he will guarantee for 3 months. Hope I can find him. Next time, I am asking this forum for referrals in the Northern CA area.

Thanks to all.

Should have take it to lowsaturn, I bet he can finish it in one afternoon and will charge you less than 1/2 of that.

Yes, you got ripped off. You should have asked BEFORE you had him fix it.

And stop worrying about being "fair"... you were too nice to that gypsy mechanic who ripped you off.

Look for the best price from a competent mechanic who will treat YOU fairly... you're the one writing the checks. And if the mechanic screws up, hold his feet to the fire and make him make it right.

Just to clarify, he got paid about $900. The rest was for parts. Though he supplied a new head and rings.

I guess I have a need to know how badly I got ripped.
