Open the hood. If the spark plugs come out at an angle, you have an SL1, if their straight up, you have an SL2. The difference is basically more power for the SL2 and more features.

Default Re: SL1, SL2 Whats the difference?

I know that the SL2 has the lights that wrap around the rear of the car, and not just on the corner. I believe the SL2's are sportier and have better suspension.. I am still trying to find out the differences between the SL, SL1, and SL2 when I see them on the road... I really still don't know the differences between the SL and SL1. Is that the SL has black bumpers and the SL1 doesn't..

Oh well, I didn't even know there was an "SL", does this mean there's also an "SC" ?

Well, yes, there is an SC, but that was just an SC2 before there was an SC1.
The SL is a lower model of the SL1. It has the same engine, but fewer features. I believe plain SLs lack power steering, right side mirrors, etc.

Yes there's an SL and an SC. The SL is a base sedan like the SL1, but the SL has fewer options available. The SL has an 8v SOHC engine like the SL1. The 1991-92 SC was a twin cam 16v coupe that had pop-up headlights.

Right side mirror, power steering, and A/C were optional in the SL. I'm pretty sure you could not get an automatic at all in an SL. There might have been a couple of others, like rear speakers. The title/ownership should tell you which model it is.

Happy Re: SL1, SL2 Whats the difference?

Hi, yes i do have the SL1, i was just wondering. This car does have some of the options like A/C, ABS, and Traction Control. It also has the Right Mirror, Rear Speakers, Power Steering, and Auto....But it does not have the power windows and locks, or a sun roof, real rims, or the DOHC.-- This site rocks!:-)

Main difference is that the SL & SL1 have the single cam engine (85hp for '91-'94, 100hp for '95-'02) and the SL2 has the twin cam engine (124hp all years). Also, the twin cam models have a rear swaybar, and a larger front swaybar. The single cam models have no rear swaybar. Twin cam models have upgraded front seats and fabrics. SLs came with unpainted bumpers, as did most years of SL1, while SL2s always had painted bumpers. SL2s came with 15" wheels, while most SLs and SL1s came with 14" steelies with hubcaps, though they were sometimes optioned with the 15" alloys. Single cam transmissions were geared for economy, twin cam trannies geared for acceleration.

The same goes comparing SC1 & SC/SC2, and SW1 & SW2. There are a lot of other differences specific to gens/years, and some smaller, nitpicky differences.

Not when your DMV is full of lazy fingered people. I'm 95% sure the titles for my SC2 and SL2, as well as my moms SC1 say SC or SL, with no numbering.

The DMV doesn't determine the model. The VIN does. The DMV person keys in the VIN, and the database determines the model (and make and year).

We can do the same: http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...in_decode.html

hi, i know this forum is a little old and the question might be outdated but, the difference between a saturn sl1 and sl2 as far as the second gen, is the sl1 has single cam engine from the factory, and black bumpers with black door handles. The saturn sl2 has a twin cam engine, with colored bumpers and a wrap around tail light. Hope that answered it, unless it was already answered.

Default Re: SL1, SL2 Whats the difference?

From my knowledge, obviously sl2s are twin cams and sl's and sl1s are single, which can be determined by looking under the hood. As for the generation changes, that's where it gets complicated. Every single sl2 I've seen has the reflector strip across the back, where sl1s only have a light on each side. A lot of sl1s and sl's have rubber or gray front and rear bumpers, I've never seen an sl2 with that. I've also heard that sl2s have sportier suspension, but I don't know what the difference is and if there was one I would love to know. Many of my friends have owned s series through the years, and i have a habit of paying attention to them on the road, and i own a 99 sl2 right now. Generally, the sl2s have more options, every sl1 I've been in has been a base model with manual everything, where mine has power windows/locks, ac, factory alloys and spoiler, cruise control, and too many other random options to list, but I will say that these small things make a world of difference in convenience, and i prefer the twin cam over the single. More power, same fuel economy, less problems.
