Default help please- brake lights not working

My wife was pulled over a few hours ago in our "03 vue to be told that only the top brake light was functioning. I checked the fuse and it's OK. Then I realized that the tail lights work, but they don't get brighter when the brake is depressed.

Is there a relay fuse or something I am missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated so my wife won't get rear-ended!

thanks again,

J.

Yes- I believe there are 3 lights in the tail light assembly- top 2 are red and bottom one is the clear backup light. the 2 red lights illuminate when headlights are turned on but when the brake pedal is depressed, one of those bulbs should get brighter. that doesn't happen.

If both sides don't lite up when you depress the brake pedal, it is probably a fuse or switch...check the fuses!! Interior by passenger footwell and under hood by battery....I blew one screwing around with turn light signal install...oops. I later found out I missed it, as there seems to be a million fuses for the same thing....

Are the bulbs any good? The tail lamps can still work but that does not mean that the brake filament is not bad. Double filament bulbs.

I have seen both side brake bulbs not work at the same time.

I have chased my tail on that one before.... didnt test bulbs first.... started jumpering switches and what not.... replaced the bulb and whattaknow...

Never thought both would go out at roughly the same time.... but stranger things happen....

I learned that lesson and will never forget it....

If it's not the bulbs, check the brake light switch. It's most likely up under the dash board connected to the brake pedal. The switch on my Mountaineer somehow got really hot and melted enough of the switch case plastic to interferre with making a complete circuit. Same thing happened to a friend's VW Jetta. Kinda scary really. I just cleaned up the switch with a razor blade and didn't have any problems with it for the remaining year that I owned it.

If it were the brake light switch, the high mount bulbs wouldnt light up.... all 3 are on the same circuit.
