Question Engine heritage. New tranny reliability.

Hi:
There's been speculation for years about the pedigree of the engines used in the Saturn lines. There has always appeared to be very strong influence from Toyota (probably from the old NUUMI days), which, as a manufacturing consultant, I would consider to be a major plus. So, this said, as I contemplate the purchase of a Vue I wonder if anyone can confirm the design of the 2.2 L four that they are using?
Second, has GM used this CVT tranny in anything else, or would I be the guinea pig.
Thanks for the thoughts!

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
