Default tinting windows: felt lining

has anyone ever tried just adding some sort of regular felt possibly backed with 3M double sided tape instead of taking the car to the dealership and paying way to much just to be able to tint your windows? i have an 03 ion and im pretty sure i have that damn rubber lining that supposebly scratches tint. if anyone has had the dealer replace the lining for free or cheap (under $50) let me know
thanks

Let me get this right...you want to cover your windows with felt? You realise that you can't see through felt right?

How about drapes, shades, or mini blinds?

Wouldn't you think the tape would be visible from outside, and rather ugly?

Well, ummm is it scratched? Why replace something that "suposedly" scratches?

Why in the world would the dealer replace it for free or cheap if there's nothing wrong with it?

NO, NO, GOD NO.

im not talking about drapes or covering the windows with tape or felt. on older ions the slot where the window slides into when you roll it down is lined with rubber. early on people realized that when they got their windows tinted, this rubber lining would scratch the tint. to fix the problem the dealerships offered to replace the rubber lining with a felt lining. Saturn finaly fixed the problem by making the flet lineing stock. You guys have an 05 and an 06 so its not problem for you. but for us with 03s and 04s i think, we got screwed tinting wise. i realize i might not have explained the situation very well, but i assumed anyone who would chime in would know what i was talking about.

I know what you are talking about.
My 04 QC had the same problem.

I took my car to the dealership and they replaced them for free.

They should do it for free but they wont cover the window tint if it is already scratched.

never had a tinting problem with rubber in the past but it all depends on the quality of tint you use... they have some pretty non scratch resistand stuff but it gets spendy..

I know what you mean too. If you're planning to have a tint shop install the tint they might already be aware of this issue. About 18 months ago when I had my 04' windows tinted the shop that I went to knew about the IONs. They custom made the wipe strips for all four windows. You might call some shops and ask them if they know of this issue and how to work around it.

Since you have an 03' the dealer may not offer you any help at this late date.

It all depends I guess. There was a service bulletin put out about this a long time ago...

Bulletin/Recall: #03-08-64-038

Years: 2003 & 2004

Problem: Aftermarket window tinting on side windows becomes scratched or torn.

Recommended Dealer Correction: Replace inner side window seal strips with new strips using a flocked design instead of Teflon.

Some dealers will do it for free. It all depends on where you go. Here are some pictures in jmettee's gallery about this...

http://www.saturnfans.com/photos/sho...e/2/ppuser/957

I think he did his himself, so perhaps PM him and he can give you some information on it.

I don't know about other dealerships, but mine is replacing the window strip and the tint for free this week. I had mine tinted while I was overseas and didn't know anything about the problem with scratching, but lately the windows have been getting pretty badly scratched. I had it at the dealership for some other work and they told me about the problem. They had to order the window parts and schedule the appointment for the tint job at the shop that they use.

I talked to the service manager at my dealership and he told me they would replace mine for free if my car was still under warrenty. Well, its been over 3yrs so my car is past the 3yr factory warrenty, but still under the extended 4 yr/48000 mile warrenty so they won't replace them. But the parts were only $26.00 per window so I just purchased the four pieces and I'm going to do it myself. I don't trust just anyone to touch my car anyways. Its just a plastic clip and the door panel isn't hard to take off. Probably an hour of your time to DIY.

I tried to get mine to do it - in the week or so i had the tint there's a hairline scratch on mine (you really have to look for it) so i wanted to see if they'd bend over for me they didn't.
