Default Vue whistling from mirror?

I just got my Vue 4FWD-SP yesterday. So far we like it. No strut noise yet. I do have a different noise, however.

Starting at 55 MPH and up, there appears to be a whistling noise from the drivers side outside mirror. It is loudest at about 62 MPH. Folding the mirror in make the noise go away. The passenger mirror, even though it looks the same, does NOT make this noise. It is pretty high pitched and jind of hard to localize the source.

It can be heard with all the windows up (its cold up here yet) and over the radio at soft volume.

I don't remeber this noise when we test drove a different Vue 3 weeks ago and we did go 65 MPH, with the radio off, so we should have heard it.

Any one else have this problem?

Bob

I'm driving the AWD V6 and have not heard any noise from the side mirrors. This interesting that you folded the mirror in and the noise went away. Do you have any options like the front hood wind deflector, or the side window defectors? Let us know here on the list.

Default No options

Nope, no window deflectors or brush gaurd or hood bug deflectors. Only options above "standard" 4 are ABS, floor mats, molded mud flaps an cargo cover. Maybe the mub flaps might make a difference, but that is the only one of the options that could and the noise seems to be higher up.

BobVVUE02;
There was a problem early on with whistle from outside rear-view mirrors on L Series cars at highway speeds. Turned out to be faulty gasket/sealant material used in assembling the mirror units.
The mirror units on the VUE look similar to the ones on the Ls so I suspect that this problem is back.

This was a fairly common glitch so fix should be well known by your dealer. The fix is covered by TSB#99-T-59 issued in Nov,1999.

Have them do both mirrors at same time to save going back again. The drivers side usually goes first followed by passenger side a month or so later. At least that was the experience of everyone I know who had the problem........including me.

Our '94 SC1 had the same problem. They had to reseal the mirrors to fix it.

Default Windows up

Atlease windows appear to be up. The noise goes away when the mirror is folded in, so that isn't a window thing.

maynardf1 , how did they seal the mirrors? There didn't apear to be any sealant on the mirror.

In any case, so far, this seems to be an isolated case. Others aren't screaming "Me too, same problem."

Is it repeatable? Then you've a good demo case back to the dealer, should be fixed under warranty no problem.

It's been a while, and we traded the car six years ago, but as I recall, the mechanic put a bead of black caulking around the entire area where the mirror met the car. The mirrors were black, so it wasn't noticeable.
Still waiting for our vue, so I can't look at the mirror closely to compare set-ups. SC1's of course did not fold in (not intentionally anyway )

Default Repeatable

Yes, it is repeatable. Just drive over 60 MPH. Should be able to get dealer to fix.

I'll look closely at the mating surface between the mirror and the body on both sides and see if there is a difference.

Is this the problem referred to in TSB: 030858005 ?
It's described as: WIND NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS FROM BASE OF DRIVER SIDE (LEFT) A-PILLAR NEAR VIN PLATE AREA.
Dated October 2003. Don't have access to the text of the TSB... Can anyone tell me what the fix is?

I would like to know that too about that TSB. I posted a wind noise problem on my 02 SC that starts at 45 mph like clockwork. It actually sounds like it is from both front posts, not the windows. I'll also look at the mirrors to see if there is a sealing difference there.

That TSB would be for VUE's no S-series cars. Your noise though is likely due to a similar problem. If your car still has warrenty get it to your local Saturn service department for them to check out. It may be some as easy as getting more foam inbehind the mirror mount to prevent the wind from getting in behind the mirror.

Question Re: Vue whistling from mirror?

Not to change the subject, but how do you fold the mirror? My '04 FWD doesn't seem to want me to fold its mirrors...and the owner's manual doesn't mention it. I'd like to fold them for the car wash.

They pivot at the base. If you can't figure out how to do it take a run by your local Saturn and they will show you.

Thanks, ssicarman. I was looking for some sort of remote release, so I missed the obvious.

Yep. Replace the mirror. There is a bulletin on this.
