Default Got a Squeak? Add a Shim.

Seeing as I am the king of procrastination, I ignored a slight squeak in my car until after my warranty expired. Well, I really hated to go to the dealer because it took them half a dozen visits to fix my door leak problems that I had last year. This, I guess, was just laziness on my part.

So, the squeak got worse over the last two months. It was driving me mad. It sounded much like a bunch of crickets chirping. My wife determined that it was coming from her (passenger) seatbelt. I popped out the trim around the passenger door, found the box at which the seatbelt rolls up into, and tapped on it. The thing squeaked like mad when I tapped it (even with really soft taps), so I installed a thin shim in between it and the point it was rubbing against. No more squeaks!

I probably could have simply added a little lubricant instead, and it would have corrected the problem. I think that the squeaking is actually the fault of the Saturn dealership, who used a dry tracing chalk *everywhere* around the door to find those door leaks that I mentioned above. I popped that trim off and found white chalk all over the stuff inside (around the seatbelt). They always leave your cars dirtier than when you bring them to them... Apparently even in places in which they think you'll never see it. Oh well.

Anyway... A shim or a lubricant are all it takes to fix a squeak. Don't be afraid to hunt it down if it's out of warranty and you procrastinate with getting it fixed, like I do.
