opinion on NAPA 10W-30 motor oil?

Just had another engine installed in my SC2 and the installer is recommending Napa 10W-30.

What do you all think of this type motor oil?

I use Castrol Syntec in my other cars.

If you do a Google search, you will find out that NAPA oil is really Valvoline.

I thought all S series required 5-30 grade oil by manufacturer ?

In warmer months, 10w30 is fine. It won't make a bit of difference.

Yep, NAPA oil is Valvoline. Good stuff, I use it in all my cars.

Yep, NAPA is Ashland/Valvoline... . I especially like the synthetic,
which you used to catch on sale at a great price. Cost is closer to
Mobil 1 nowadays, so I use whatever I get the best price on.

If that makes the installer happy go with it.

He sounds like a friendly guy, if you follow his advice he might comp you a favor if your warranty just ran out.

He can't restrict you to that brand per se... but hang on to your napa receipts.

The NAPA "synthetic" isn't a true synthetic, it's really a synthetic blend.

If the price is similar, it's a no brainer to get Mobil 1.

Yes he said Napa and I'm using Castrol.
I'm hearing good things about Pennzol Platinum.

I've been around long enough to know that really any quality motor oil will do if you keep your engine service properly.


I was using Royal Purple in one of my cars but became concerned when issue were raised about long inteval shear factors.

I sure Napa is a good oil and may give it a try in the Saturn anyway though the warranty period anyway.

The older blends of Penzoil had parafins that supposedly caused sludge build up, but there's a lot of argument about that. The current blends don't have that. There's nothing wrong with Penzoil. Though I think Havoline is supposed to have a better additive package from reading BITOG.

A trick I noticed on determining a 'house' brand is to look at the shape of the bottle and see if it matches a name brand.

I believe the bottles even mention Ashland (which is Valvoline's parent company)

Just because it is made by the same company does not mean it's the same formulation. The house brand oils may be made by a major oil company, but they'll certainly use a lesser additive package (still meets specs of course) for the lower price.
