Dizzy HELP!!! Tach / Engine Problems!!! Still need someone to help!!!

Okay, going to try to make this short. My car has been acting crazy for about a month now. I go to stop at an intersection or something, and my car will pop up 500+ rpm and try to take off (you literally feel the car move forward a foot or two). No matter how hard you are on your brakes, it still moves. It was only doing this when stopped / stopping, but now it is doing it while actually driving. My car has been at the dealer now for 3 days and they can't find anything wrong. No codes. No visual problems.

There is two problems known to the car at the moment. My belt tensioner is out of alignment and needs to be replace (have the part in my trunk to do tomorrow) and my oil pan is leaking (have the sealant to fix problem for that also). Everyone says that the belt needing changing and belt tensioner has nothing to do with the pushing forward that my car is doing. Does it??? If not, anyone know what is wrong with my car??? I am scared I am going to hit someone!!!

are you running your a/c? (you are by me so most likely yes, lol). If so the compressor takes a lot of energy and that could be the reason, my car does same so i shut a/c off at lights. Other than that, well i dont know?

No, don't run the A/C. I smoke, so my windows are always down, so I never really use it, at least not till August or so, even then, not really.

Hmmm, I dunno then, that was the extent of my knowledge there, unless maybe you need to clean some things up, change an ects, clean an egr valve, change some spark plugs and possible wires.(Oh and this probably has no relation but check your motor mount also, I notice mines not as bad anymore when I use the a/c...)

Someone will help you out though Good people on this board!

not too technical, but check around your pedals for something that may have rolled up there or your floor mats getting out of control.

Sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere, or perhaps the EGR is getting stuck open when it shouldn't. A vacuum leak would allow more air past the throttle, and the car would behave as though you hit the gas pedal. More RPM and more torque against your brakes.

The belt tensioner will only make your accessories work bad or squeak. The accessories are the alternator, water pump, PS if you have it, and AC which you say you don't use. if the belt is slipping you will hear it, that nice squeal from the right side (passenger side) of the engine compartment. While it's squealing you might notice hard steering, dimmer lights, and if it squeals for a while it might affect the engine temperature. None of those things (with the exception of really bad drops in voltage) should have any effect on your idle speed.

Check for vacuum leak. This would cause the revs to increase giving you the pull at lights. I've driven with a vacuum leak and experienced teh same symptoms.

Happy Re: HELP!!! Tach / Engine Problems!!! Still need someone to help!!!

Thanks everyone for your help I picked it up after 4 days at the dealer here, and they never found any leaks or any codes, nothing and of course now it is driving fine I changed my belt last night, as well as my air filter (which really needed it ) All noises have stopped, and it is fine at the stops / lights. I just think it gets *****y (guess that's why cars are referenced as "her" and "she" ) Anyways, I will keep an eye out, and I now have a manual so I can figure out what a throttle is so next time it happens, I can maybe fix it without having to take it in for another 4 days!

p.s. I don't know about your guy's experiance with Saturn Dealerships, but ours here is great. 4 days of diagnostics, and they fixed my brake calipers, NO CHARGE!!! Thanks Saturn!!!

Well good luck with it.
Free? I get free work, but it's in my friend's garage (well it usually coasts me a lunch or two, but he's a Saturn Tech) Free work at the dealer tho, I don't even get that (well now I do WARRANTY! ) and they love me their, I'm always there. Free work, geeze, Saturn of Windsor is gonna hear about this one.

This sounds like classic ECTS (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) failure. Searching for ECTS will show tons of threads like yours. It's intermittent, and when it does it, it's totally out of the blue. If it went out like mine did, the engine revs up and your temperature gauge will go up and down much faster (as in makes a split-second jump instead of a gradual slide). If you're stopped, the revving is enough to make the car lurch forward, and you have to apply the brakes much harder.
It revs because the sensor makes the computer think the engine is too cold (note the temperature gauge will drop very low from very high) so it runs the engine harder to get the temperature back up (when in reality, it's already hot).

Very easy fix, the dealer can do it for $150 or you can do it yourself for $15-30
