Default Slotted/Drilled Rotors

I am looking for better rotors for my '05 Vue v6. Both orig rotors are warped after 26k mi. Actually have the same problem on my '04 Vue also.

Default Re: Slotted/Drilled Rotors

Be very careful with drilled rotors. Drilled rotors have many stress risers that can cause cracks. Most racers don't even use drilled rotors anymore due to better brake pad compounds. Rotors were originally drilled due to the outgassing of the brake pads at very high temperatures.

Drilling the rotors also decreases the mass of the rotors. This also will reduce the heat absorbtion of the rotors due to less steel mass to absorb heat energy. They will cool off quicker, because of the same reasons. With this more significant heat cycling, chances of cracking and warping are increased significantly.

Sorry for no real answer to warped rotors, but drilling can be dangerous on a street car where they aren't checked very regularly.

Rotors can warp for many reasons but one of the over looked items is tightening the front lug nuts (to the proper torque) as specified in the service manual.

you can always temper the rotor after you drill/slot it. improper tempering could warp it though, so do it correctly.

if you are seriously concerned with braking, get a larger disc brake kit and some high quality pads. you will need some different wheels than stock, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

tires have a lot to do with braking as well, maybe a different tire is in order.

You can get "better" rotors that are not drilled. I've seen a lot of aftermarket rotors that are just slotted. Seems to me Tire Rack has a good selection. Don't know what's available for Vues though.

Drilled rotors are fine, however. You still see them on many h/p cars coming from almost all the car manufacturers. Usually, the cracks around the holes are caused when someone who doesn't know what they're doing drills them themselves.
