Question Speaker sizes

I want to replace/add speakers to my 1999 SL. I have heard different sizes everywhere. Does anyone know what size to put in the front doors and rear deck? Any reccomended ones?

Thanks

you can put either 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 in both front and rear. 6 1/2 probably suggested for better mid-bass. as for brand, pioneer and sony make decent speakers for a reasonable price.

Crutchfield says 6 3/4" speakers. Will smaller sizes fit without an adaptor?

Do the SLs have rear speakers? If not, is the wiring there?

my suggestion is 6 1/2".. they are a very standard speaker, you will not need an adapter... and as long as speakers came in the rear, which they should, there will be wiring for them.

btw, 6 3/4" speakers are very new and not made by many companies.

Thanks for the info everyone.

My 1999 SL has Speaker holes and the wiring in the back even though there weren't factory speakers installed.

Yes, 6 3/4" is on all S series cars in all years, but watch the DEPTH on the front speakers. They're a little too shallow for my Pioneer TS-A1795's. I may have to mod my door to get them in

Both CC and BB computers said 6 1/2" for my 99SC2. I went with the Alpine 1629S coaxials. They sound great with my Alpine CDM 7871 cd/receiver.
I measured the "premium" speakers removed at 6 1/2" also. Haven't done the rears yet, but 6 1/2 is also the recommended diameter.
Good luck

I would recommend 6 3/4" for both front and back, or a speaker that is a 'drop in' replacement for a a 6 3/4 if you must use something smaller. The speakers I really wanted for my front doors were 6 1/2 and required an adapter. When I installed them, the door panel stuck out about a half inch around the speaker. After about an hour of grinding on the inner panel and the adapter I got them to fit, but if I had to do it again I would have used 6 3/4. The speaker selection is smaller, but it will save you a lot of grief.

I used 6 3/4 in the rear, and they dropped right in. It was so nice after fighting with the fronts. Depending on the adapter and the brand of speaker, you may be able to use a smaller size in the front with no modifications, but I wouldn't risk it.

The 99 SL's have plenty of depth in the front: 3 5/16"

all saturns 91-02 Sx and Lx all have 6 1/2" front and back, they used to say ours were 6 1/2s or 6 3/4 but all manufactures now have bolt holes on them that fit right up to your car... the best speakers out there are MB quartz, boston, polk and infinity i know that polk ex365 are $119/pr at any circuit city and infinity 652i are $99/pr others the other two are a bit pricier you'll have to look at someplace like sound advice for thoose.
