Wolfman Thanks again for the hint toward the fan circuit. I bet you will be right on this one. If you save me that 45 mile drive to the dealer you can have my first born.

(FYI- longish post)
Well I finally bit the bullet and took mine in. I happened to be running a bunch of errands and was passing a Saturn dealer (not my local one). I asked the service writer about scanning for codes. He said sure - $99, and that charge will be applied towards any repairs you have done. I said "the dealer I usually go to (if I really have to) would do it for $40." He said "How about $47.50?" "Fine"
So I let them work on the car while I checked out the new goodies in the showroom. They found the following codes: P0341, P1650, P1651, and the service guy said that the codes were there because my SES light wasn't working. He said this might be because my EL Glo white face gauges were flickering intermittently and this may be causing a problem in the cluster. I told him the gauges were wired on a separate circuit, and the factory gauge lighting worked fine... probably just a bad bulb. I paid my $50 and then finished running my errands. I figure that at least now I have the codes (and they did wash the car). Sometime in the next few weeks I'll pull the cluster and check everything out (I have a new EL glo gauge kit on the shelf just waiting).

Thanks for all the info and for letting me ramble,
Steve H.

I've got the exact same problem as mine WAS throwing a P1046 code at the emissions center. I did all you did and am still also getting the Service/Wrench light. I went to two, count em two, Autozones and both tested out with no codes, passed. I can't go through emissions with a light on or they will fail it. More suggestions?

And that fixes a mechanical problem?

The light wasn't on the first 1,000 miles I had it. It then came on a few days from emissions test. Got the light off with some gas treatment put it still threw a P1406 code, so it failed. Even if I had taped the light up then, it would have failed.

I'd rather find out if there is a reason for this before I hide the warning light with tape... but thanks for the thoughtful suggestion...

On mine the light went out on its own. No clue why it was on or why it turned off. The car was getting great gas milage and was running fine, so there was no way I was paying a dealer $50 to tell me there was no problem.

I'd suggest that if the emissions people are so stupid as to fail a car for emissions when the definition of the light is "non-emissions related" problem, then I think old coot's black tape behind is a perfectly valid solution. Anyway, their OBD II code reader won't see an error, either, because its generic, just like mine and the ones at Autozone.

just my humble guess/opinion...

Umm... don't you know exactly what is wrong now? So just go buy and replace the 89 cent light bulb already!

DTC P1406 EGR Valve Pintle Position Circuit

How about you just FIX the EGR valve instead? It'll take a lot less effort than pulling apart the cluster to tape over the light....

I cleaned the EGR valve per the instructions on this website. I did pass emissions today... no codes... though the list still remains on. I'm leaving the battery cable off tonight. I'll see if that fixes anything.

Thanks!

(typo on "list") Actually meant the light still stays on... but I put black electrical tape over my left eyeglass lense and it is helping me not see the light.....
